Site is getting Slow.. here are our options

Hey guys, youve probally noticed the site is loading a little slow off the bat now adays, the increase in traffic has put quite the load on the servers, and its a dedicated P4 box so we cant do much to make it any better.

We have a few options, like removing some of the features thats on the board like the Personal Page etc. to help lessen the original Load.

Or else, we can switch Forum software, but that can sometimes be a pain in the ass.

Let me know what you guys think, if you can sacrifice some of the bling bling features for speed or anything else you can think of.

well its good to hear that we are getting that many members, as to your question I would not be to dissapointed if we just lost some of the features or I would even be up to paying a fee to help out with a new server or somthin. just my 2 cents :)

yeah on the server front we cant do much better.. unless we went big bucks. Its more the software wasnt meant to handle 5 million hits a month, to be honest when I first made the site I had this wierd impression that it would only be me and a few others here, I had this moronic idea that I was the only one that loved the DVX :)

heh heh.. I know there are some features nobody every uses, maybe I will make a list of them then have a vote to see which ones we kill.

No bling needed Jarred. You can even strip it down to DVinfo.net style.

Question:

Do the colors have any play on loadtimes? As oppossed to the standard white with grey? I think content is more important than personal pages, member maps, etc...

Are there other FORUM softwares that are faster/better?

colors dont matter. There are some other forum software that is quicker, but not compatible, meaning everyone would need to re-register :(

HAH! If we re-register than I will have the same number of posts/ member rating as you guys! MUA HA HA. (Well maybe not, since yours are personalized)

But honestly, it doesn't matter how it looks. As long as the info is well organized and easy to find.

I don't know how others feel but I wouldn't mind paying an annual fee or something as a member of DVXUser.com to keep it going strong without having to take a step back in features, etc.

Is that possible?

Your thoughts?

im for new software and getting rid of some bells and whistles. It's a lot slower than it used to be, so im willing to make some sacrafices :)

how much $$$ are we talking about here to "move up" so to speak?

i'm in for the $$$ Since i'm here most of the time on weekdays. it does get really slow at times....i'm down for whatever can make this a quicker place.

I'd gladly pay a few bucks. I like everything about the site (though I never look at the personal pages, so if that went, it'd be OK with me).

Im not planning to make the site a pay site, I just need to trim it down. The images etc arnt the problem, just the code for the software has gotten really long and thats whats slowing it down.

The image compression shouldn't be a big issue, as once it downloads, it resides in the browser cache upon refresh... it shouldn't have to reload it every page view.

I'm up for whatever. If we did switch boards (say to ikonboard, phpBB, etc), I would sure hope the database would stay intact... that would sure suck to lose all the posts.

Well I guess I will give my two cents worth...
I say strip what you can without removing the content and feel of the site.
I like what others have said... It feels like home. I think that needs to stay.
As long as we can keep the same navigation I dont see a problem taking some eye candy away.
I come to the sight to learn, as well as give help where I can.
Not to interested in the fluff

I too like the colors and the feel of the site.

The things that take the longest for my browser to load are the avatar pictures and tables. I don't think you can optimize the tables much without whacking the look of the site. You might want to shorten the number of table rows that get presented each time, or lengthen them, depending on what the actual hit to the database is.

What database are you using, or is this a flat-file thing? If it is a flat-file thing, well then no wonder the server is flailing.

It also sounds like some optimization could be performed on the CGI code itself. That's a whole project right there.

Style sheets can cut way down on server processing, too, if you aren't using them.

I doubt that the personal pages, in and of themselves, make much impact. It sounds like the server is processing- and bandwidth-starved, rather than hammered by features.

I'm putting together the video server right now for the DVX Unleashed project, and am worrying about these issues as well.

As far as fee-based membership goes, that's a hassle, but might be worth it in terms of helping defray the costs of this board. I'm in for a yearly fee thing (which keeps the overhead down!) if we end up going that way, but you also get tend to eliminate newbies like, say, Matt McDermitt.

Jarred, what operating system, database, and web server software are you using here?
