Sit, texture, sit! (C4D)

Hey,

I've run into an inevitable wall. I've finished modeling this guitar and am now beginning the texturing process. I'm trying to lay one type of wood grain along the side of the body (the curvy part). All my textures are photos.

The problem is... I can't quite get it to sit right. I've tried playing around with every type of texture projection... while some are better than others, none are ideal.

It's like... ya, that's great if you are working with primitive shapes like spheres, cubes, and cylinders... then the stock texture projection options work great. But how do you get a texture to sit right on a more intricate polygon mesh?

I suspect my solution lies in the 'UV edit' section of Bodypaint 3D (which I have).

Anyone care to enlighten?

I couldn't come up with a specific answer because I would need to see the problem. I'm assuming it's seems showing up.

There are several ways to tackle it, not all of them include unwrapping.


I sent a PM. If you could send me the texture and model part, I'd be happy to have a look.
 
update:

I believe I fixed the problem. I sent you a new project file and a mini tutorial showing what and why I did things.

Basically the polygon normals were not aligned but I wanted to touch on a few other areas in how I determined that, assigned new UVW coords, ect.

I hope that's what you were looking for.

Any chance of making this public? I've been meaning to learn more about UVW's, normals, and BP, but I haven't had the time. The couple times I've done it seemed easy, but it would be nice to learn from what others are doing.

That would be great Raptor. I used BP some but additional tuts info would help!
 
The problem is sometimes unique problems require unique solutions.
Basically he just had to align the polys using Functions->Align Normals.

He had no UVW tag at the time, and if he did you delete that. Set up your projection then choose Generate UVW Coordinates.

There are some other things he wants to do that involves using BP to unwrap.

Thats a bigger deal. I may do one for him, if so, your welcome to the file as well.
I'll have to make a video for that though. It's easy, but if some things are not in the right mode, things don't work, so it's a bit tricky at first.

I strongly recommend the BP DVD from 3D Kiwi for about 60$ from C4DCafe.
I've only seen a few bits and pieces but, yeah, if you can afford it, buy it.

Na, jus' kiddin'.

Well, I didn't get into BP at all with this one... my problem was that I had bridged the front and back of the guitar body with a 'back and forth' method. What I mean is, I would go front-to-back, then back-to-front, and so on... So what happened was the normals were all flipped around and a texture wouldn't sit correctly.

In a nutshell, the fix was to use 'Functions -> Align Normals' on the guitar body.

Now I'm wondering how to get the texture to wrap evenly around the rim of the body. I am about to go try using flat projection on the two sides, top, and bottom. I'll then line up the four 'flat' textures to form one linear wrapping texture. Finally, I will then create UVW coordinates by right clicking the textures and choosing 'assign UVW coordinates'.

Now, keep im mind I'm not sure if this will work or not. I'll report back later after trying.

Oops, Raptor posted an explanation while I was writing mine. His is more concise / informative... everything I just wrote in my post he just taught me, so he's the one who knows what he's doin' :).
