Somehow, I doubt that Kodiak was being mistreated. If it was, I don't think it would have had nearly that good of a temperament. If it was a rescued orphaned cub raised in captivity and treated well, it's no different than a trained dog... well, besides the fact that dogs have thousands of years of domestication behind them, and that thing if mad will rip you in half with one swipe. But you know what I mean.
