As I'm sure a lot of you heard, Sir Edmund Hillary died earlier this month. I didn't see any discussions about so I thought I ought to start one to commemorate this great man.
I was personally very sad to hear about his passing. Usually when celebrities or historic figures die, it saddens me, but this in particular had a fairly profound impact on me. I had the great privilege of meeting Sir Ed when I was living in New Zealand two years ago. I was there working for the outdoor pursuits centre that he founded along with
Graeme Dingle in the 1970's. During my time there, I worked with instructors and school groups and witnessed firsthand the effects of one of Sir Ed's many contributions to humanity.
I'm happy to have met him and to have contributed - albeit in a small way - to part of his legacy, but I am deeply saddened that he is gone. His accomplishments and his modesty always have and will continue to be a great inspiration to me, and I hope he will serve as a role model for many generations to come.
