Single Rycote Softie for Multiple Mic Lengths?

Perhaps you can put this in the "don't you have any common freaking sense?" column, but sound equipment can be so temperamental I thought I'd ask anyway...

I'm currently using an at897 shotgun, but hope to move up to a 4073a in the future. It will likely be at least a few months before I can upgrade, however. In the meantime, I need some better wind protection and was thinking about a Rycote Softie. Here's the problem. I see that the 4073a takes a 12cm Softie while the 897 takes a 14cm softie. Is there any reason I couldn't use the 14cm on the 4073a? Obviously, it wouldn't matter if I pulled it all the way down flush with the end of the mic, but if I needed to push it forward (leaving some "dead space" between the end of the mic and the softie) for better shock-mount balance, could that adversely affect the sound? Thanks.

I have been using the same 18 cm softie on both ME66 and Rode ntg-1 which should have a 14 cm one. I have just pushed it all the way with no dead space in the end. As long as all the side holes are covered I do not see why covering the non-acoustic back end of the microphpne would make any difference.
