Sin City Noir-ish light setup

I'm doing a shoot this weekend, and I want to do some Noir-ish Sin City styled lighting. I figure I can just tilt the key and flow so they're more directly to the right and left of the subject, backlight the subject, and toss in a little extra fill just because. Anybody had any experience with this kind of stuff? Any info or tips greatly appreciated.

Are you shooting on green screen?

They way they shot Sin City was a hard key, low/no fill, very bright rim.

yeah, for the noir feel, light as "hard" as possible and don't forget it's more about where ur shadows are then your light.

You'll probably need some pretty bright lights, or light close to the subject, that way you can stop down a LOT, which is how you get that black space on the subject between the key light and the backlight. Also, use the extreme depth of field our 1/3" censors, stage deeply.

Here is a nice link.

And TC is spot on. Sin City was huge on the Rim lights but this was for replicating the Graphic Novel look; not a film noir look.

Thanks alot guys, cool info. I'm shooting this weekend, and for the record, this is for a highschool final project, and it's just going to be shot on a shoddy 1-ship panasonic. Don't expect anything mindblowing, but I'll post it when it's done. Again, thanks

ahhh... I remember when I did my movie for my high school final... good TIMES! (class of 2003)

anyway, I dont know how much effort you'll put into it, but if your like me, you are the only one in ur group that actually gives a damn about the project being really good. Well dont let them push you around! If you know how to light at all, putting proper time into lighting each set up is what will make your movie BLOW AWAY all your fellow students. Hopefully you've had a little practice before now, but light well, and PLEASE post some grabs or footage since now I'm really interested to see how it goes :)

I shot it yesterday, I'll do some of the editing and CCing tommorrow. Anybody have any server space they'd like to donate to me, so I could post a couple clips?... thanks

huh, well i never would have guess "noir" from the grabs, but most of your light is stil impressive for a weekend high school project, the dvx doesnt hurt either (I had to borrow a friend JVC handycam)

way to go :)

It's not a DVX, its just a 30p panasonic handycam. I'll find a host for the finalized version by the end of the week

use what you got, I wish I had a 30p Pany in high school (I was going to ask how you managed to get a $3500 camera before you even graduated)
