simulating a jib shot

I don't have a jib/crane yet and was wondering if it would be futile to try to simulate a raised jib shot by standing on a chair and starting off low and slowly raising the camera up above my head. lol.

I'm going to try it tonight but wanted to get some feedback if anyone has successfly gotton good results with this method.

I'm shooting a friends wedding this weekend, and i'm thinking it might get kinda boring if I shoot everything level and from a tripod.

This MAY work if you are using a cam stabilizer like a Glidecam or Merlin. Handheld i'm sure it would just be way to shaky. As soon as you can't see the monitor anymore, your hands start doing things you arent aware of, like panning, tilting, rocking, shaking, etc. that would ultimately ruin what a jib is intended to discard.

I can successfully use a merlin for some things like ground to above my head, but a jib can do much more than that.

sure you can, I do it all the time. Practice first. It won't be quite as smooth but if you do it well it will still look very good, just not quite as silky smooth.
