Simulating a crowd Green Screen

I had started a project for a contest I was entering but never finished it in time. I recently went back to it, but I'm stuck on a part and I'm not sure what to do.

I have footage of me playing guitar in front of a green screen over the shoulder looking at the crowd. I tried to green screen myself as one of the crowd members and duplicate that a bunch of times, but it just lags the crap out of my computer ( It's a decent computer too )

Would there be an easier way to do this?

I was thinking the lights would be on the guitar player while the crowd is almost a sillouette.

i've seen some interesting things done to a still photograph with the photoshop puppet tool, waving arms and such.

id create a comp that holds just the various versions of you as crowd members, duplicate them all over the place and then render it out as a movie, then import the crowd video into the green screen guitar plate comp and should speed things up.

the computer having to deal with a green screen key & numerous raving lunatics in the crowd at once might be a bit much.

Duplicating footage multiple times with something like keylight on it is going to tax the cpu like crazy, no matter how fast your computer is.

You have a few options available to you though. You can make the crowd then hide the layers as you work on the rest of the comp then bring them back for rendering. This is what I normally do in these types of situations.

If that is not possible then another way is to make a proxy of your green-screened footage. That will be a lot more easier on the cpu.

If you aren't too sure how to make a proxy, and don't have time to look it up you can export your cheering person as a movie clip (use a codec that supports the alpha channel), and bring it in and use that to populate the audience. The problem with this though is if you need to adjust something you will have to make your changes to the greenscreened comp and re-export it.
