Simple question on setting up Sound Devices 702.

I have looked back and forth through the manual and done searches on here with no luck. Here goes...

I'm using one mic to record to both channels. How do I set the second channel at 6dB less than the first?

RTFM- Page 8. Confirm recording levels/parameters NOT locked.. and vol, are bot locked together as a stereo pair.

I have read through the manual but I find it confusing.

I did this and all is unlocked...

Okay I've done this..

Now I'm still confused. I don't see how that helps.

I have one mic. It's going into input one. I have routed it to both tracks A and B. I want track B to be about 6dB lower than track A for sudden peaks in my recording.

What else do I need to do? Surely it's dead simple.

Yes I feel like an idiot.

I don't believe it's designed to work that way.
Remember, the built-in limiter keeps everything at -6db. (and works quite well)

Okay thanks. I'm surprised by this.

I read the following about the 702 on dvxuser which got me looking for this mythical technique:

Also, if you're recording just the one mic, set your second record channel about -6dB lower than the first. This is your safety channel in case of sudden peaks. You only need one channel (track) of that audio in post, so use the primary track until there's clipping, then fall back on the safety.

But I believe you...

Turns out I'm worrying for nothing and should just use the limiters.

I finally found someone else asking the same question as me.

I have a Sound Devices 702 recording device. Something I'd love to be able to do during interviews is use one lapel microphone, but record one channel high and one channel low. That way, if the subject has an abrupt volume change, I'd be able to use the lower gained channel.

And the answer:
Hmm, I would call Sound Devices, but I don't think you can route one input to two faders.

...

I think my biggest question though, is how loud is someone yelling, and why aren't you trimming your fader's and letting the limiter keep things in check from being clipped? In my opinion the limiter on the 702 is amazing. Let it do it's job, while you do yours right?

Now I don't feel so stupid. Looks like there is no such function on the 702 and the limiter takes care of clipping if necessary.

I've never had a problem with my 722 (LOVE it!), so you should be good.....also remember, you can set the 'gain range' on the mic inputs if you're around really loud source!
THE best recorder I've ever owned.

Thanks Zaza. I love the 702 so far! I hope Sound Devices start making cameras one day. You never know!
