How do I capture 24p normal (non adv) and remove the 2:3 pulldown? I'm using FCP5. I've only ever shot 24pa before and I know how to do that, but this job demands 24p normal. Also I understand that I have to edit in a 29.97 timeline. right?

barry?
anyone?

ps I just bought your book, anticipating it's arrival!

For 24P Normal you do not need to remove the pulldown to work on a 29.97 timeline, in fact, that's what it was designed for. The only time you have to do anything to it is when you are trying to 24P Normal on a 24P timeline.

Here's my two cents that will surely get you more confused.

IF you shoot 24p you will have 2.3 cadence

If you edit that shot 24p you'll edit in 29.97 chopping all over the cadence

If you preview that edited timeline your cadence will NOT be very smooth

SO -

Shoot in 24pA and edit in 24fps then add the cadence BACK over the top of the completed edit when you go to lock.

Or, shoot 24p (if you have to ...) and take captured material to Cinema Tools and remove the 2.3 cadence there. No big deal - very easy to do.

I take back my previous post. Chopping over 24p mode 3.2 cadence in a 29.97 timeline has been going on for nearly 15 years with tv shows shot on film.

My bad.

And then edit in a 24p timeline?!?! or 29.97?

After removing the pull-down, you should edit on a 23.98 Timeline. 24p is 23.98p unless you've shot real 24p without pull-down methods, but DVX isn't capable of doing this.
