Simple Question about Lens Adapters

I have a simple question... when the Lens Adapters like Red Rock or Brevis and the like, is it a single adapter that allows for various lens types (Nikon, Cannon, etc.) to be attached or do you need to buy a complete adapter for the Nikon or another for the Canon, etc.

I have access to some simple Canon lenses, but they would not be my long term choice, so I was wondering if I bought a Brevis, for example, if I later changed to Nikon lenses, could I get a simple add on adapter for the Nikon or would I need to purchase a separate Nikon-ready Brevis.

Wow, I didn't think I'd stump anyone.

My guess is that you buy one device that can accommodate multiple lens adapter connections for various 35mm lens manufacturers, but wanted to make sure.
 
You can buy different lens mounts, which vary in price depending on your adapter. Check the individual company websites for pricing info.
