Simple problem...

Hey, I'm new to After Effects. I have some text effects I want to bring into Avid, but I can't figure out how to make the background transparent. I can change it's color, but I'm not sure how to adjust its opacity.

I've tried to look for the answer, but most tutorials I've seen deal with more complex things and they simply put the step, "put on a transparent background" or "to export preserving the alpha channel".

I think they assume you know how to do this, but I don't. Any help would be appreciated.

(I have 6.5 Pro, btw)

Create your text on it's own layer, and make sure you don't have any solids or anything behind it. Just the text layer or whatever you want to be included when you import it into your avid. At this point you can check the alpha channel by clicking the little "white" button in the viewer window at the bottom. There's red, green, blue, and alpha. This lets you view only the alpha data. After you've deemed it ok that it's outlining your text sufficiently, turn it off.

Then, to export it (make movie), select a codec that allows you to include alpha, such as animation. Make sure you set it to millions+ colors. The "+" means alpha included. Now, just export a file using that codec and import it into your avid. It should use the embedded alpha and just show the text.

That's the 2 second rundown. Let us know if it doesn't work for you.

Note that when you render you have the choice in the output module to output straight or premultiplied depending on what the avid is expecting. If you get a halow around your text output in the other setting or tell the avid what settign you used.
