Simple FCP Question

Hello,

I usually cut video on Avid software. However, I have been testing out FCP lately but I found some really don't like when importing .mov files. The files import fine and quickly but when I drag them down to the Timeline they need to be rendered. It there a way I can get around this rendering?

Thanks

Double check your item properties on your .mov files and your sequence settings. Make sure frame rate/codec are as similar as possible.

Otherwise, if from another program like After Effects, they may need to be converted from RGB to YUV, thus giving you the unrendered notice.

Your sequence is probably DV codec and your clips are probably a different codec. FCP will need to convert your clips in that case to match the sequence so it can playback in realtime. Check what options you have when exporting from whereever you're getting the movie files.

you can sometimes change your sequence settings to match the clip you are using. that is the reason you are having to render. the clip settings dont match the sequence settings.

Yep, by default FCP uses DV/DVCPRO NTSC codec (go to sequence settings - Apple 0 - to check). When rendering from another app (i.e. After Effects), just render out in the DV/DVCPRO NTSC codec and your golden.

Of course, if you change one codec in one app, you'll need to match it in the other (but I don't know how real time playback would be affected). Someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

I too cut on an Avid, so I understand someone of the transition pains :)

Thanks folks!

OK, I went my bin and looked at the item properties...

Vid Rate: 29.97 fps
Frame Size: 720 x 540
Compressor: Sorenson Video 3
Field Dominance: Not Set
Pixel Aspect: Square
Aud Rate: 32.0 KHz

Then, I went to Sequence Presets...

Duplicated NTSC 48 kHz
Renamed it "Test"
Changed the Frame Size to 720 x 540
Aspect Ratio to "Custom"
Pixel Aspect Ratio to "Square"
Field Dominance to "None"
Editing Timebase to 29.97
Compressor to Sorenson Video
Audio Settings to 32.000

Result: Still have to render. I'll keep trying...
