Simple DVD ripping question

What is the best way to get video off of a DVD? I don't want to rip the VOB files into compressed divx files or anything like that. I would like to convert them back to MPEG2 (or whatever) and get the most minimal amount of quality loss.

I was using FlaskMpeg, but kept getting some weird interlacing issues.

Thanks

On PC, i've found that there are tools for easily ripping DVD's to DivX and Mpeg 4. However none of these file formats edit easily on a pc.

Generally what I do, in case I need to edit a DVD, is to play it on a set top player, (or my PC, depending on where i'm at) and run it into my DV camera and hit record.

Converting Mpeg-2 files to any kind of format is hugely time consuming, and you'll kick your self for days after you find you you spent 37 hours rendering a file only to find out it's in the wrong aspect ratio.

On Mac.. handbrake is okay, but Cinematize is the best. You can convert it to editable quicktime.. in a variety of quality presents... I've used it quite a bit and it's very easy but you do need a fast system and a large harddrive.

I also like DVD backup and DVD2 to 1 as other options for ripping. Your quality is also dictated by the lenght of the movie.. and the options that you select. Best qualty would be to just rip the movie, and the worst quality would be if you got the movie and all the bonus stuff.

Just a bit of time testing and you'd be running well. The stuff works a lot easier and more reliably on the Mac platform for sure. Lots of buggy stuff on the PC of course.
