simple conversion

For work, I had to express how much video would fit onto a flash drive or CD. I had to explain about compressed and uncompressed video. Here is a simple conversion for those who want a quick look. Also correct me where I went wrong. These are only approximate conversions just to give you an idea.

.AVI:
3.5MB/sec
.274sec/MB

1GB=4 Minutes of video
700MB (1CD)= 3.3 Minutes of video

.WMV*:
.039MB/sec
25.36sec/MB

1GB=7.2 hours of video
700 MB(1CD)=4.19 hours of video

*General Summary:
Output: Compressed
Average Kbps: 343.52

Video Summary:
Codec: Windows Media Video V8
Encoding Passes: Two
Bitrate Mode: Constant

Audio Summary:
Codec: Windows Media Audio 9.1
Encoding Passes: Two
Bitrate Mode: Constant

Metadata Summary:

Audiences Summary:
High bandwidth
Maximum Bitrate [kbps]: 312.52 (low quality)
Frame Rate [fps]: 30
Pixel Aspect Ratio: Square Pixels (1.0)
Frame Width [pixels]: 320
Frame Height [pixels]: 240
Keyframe Interval [seconds]: 5
Buffer Size [seconds]: Default
Image Quality: 50.00 (medium quality)
Audio Format: 32 kbps, 44 kHz, stereo CBR

I also have a question. The people I produce this video for isnt happy with the video quality. I dont want to increase the bit rate, because we want to reach a wide range of internet users (56k through hardcore fast). So i though what i have is a middle ground. Is there anything else i can do to create a better picture?

To save some space I would lower the bitrate of your audio. Keep it as low as you can. You do not need CD quality audio for the web.

Also, you could try VBR on the video. Let it give more where it is needed and use less where it is not. You can set the average bitrate so that it does not go out of control. If I am not mistaken, lowering your Keyframes can save some hard drive space too. Though I think for streaming video 5 keyframes per sec is recomended.

Does it need to be in wmv?
If you are using downloded video, try the newest codecs. (H.264)

Just some thoughts...

Good luck,

ripping a DVD, one VOB has no audio

ripping a DVD, one VOB has no audio

I need to make some web clips (WMV). For the source, I have only an mpg2 DVD.

I ripped the DVD using DVD Decrypter -- there is no encryption. The directory I created has two VOBs. I drop both of them on a timeline in Vegas 6.0. One of them has an audio track (which syncs fine from start to end), but one VOB has no audio (there is audio under this video on the source). I've searched here and tried tweaking some setting in Decrypter. No dice.

Suggestions appreciated.
