simple audio questions

I am new the audio portion of filming and I have a couple of questions:

1. After recording, I capture into Premiere and the audio file is in stereo. I had been told once that when creating digital films to make the audio mono. Is this true? If so, how do I smash to mono?

2. Are there any simple tricks that anyone knows to smooth out the audio, in the NLE? Do you use any of the audio effects in PPro 1.5?

The audio I am recording is not bad, by any means, but I am aware of many video tweaks, and never have learn about audio. Thanks!

1. Remove or mute the other channel. Duplicate or pan to center the remaining channel.

2. Smooth out is a pretty broad term. I guess you could trim out the junk you don't want and replace with room tone but being able to only cut at frame level makes even that difficult. If you have the Adobe suite, try using Audition to work on your audio. NLE are not designed to do anything complicated with audio.

These two books will get you up to speed on audio: http://www.dplay.com/book/index.html

You should hire a competent sound editor to help you out. They can show you what you need to know. It's hard to explain all that goes on with post sound on a message board..(at least for me it is) in a short paragraph.
