Silly stupid anamorphic question I don't know the answer to

I ran a search but couldn't come up with the answer. I just got the anamorphic adapter and imported some clips. After some playing around I know that I need to 'unsqueeze' the image out to NTSCDVWidescreen in order for it to display properly. I've got that part. Here is my question:

Is there a way to get the settings so I don't need to right mouse click every clip so that Vegas 5 will automatically recognize it as squeezed footage?

Thanks!

Jeremy

I shoot a lot of squeeze and all I have to do is go to File>Preferences and set the template to NTSC DV Widescreen. I don't have to do anything beyond that.

EDIT: Also, right click on the preview window and check "Simulate Device Aspect Ratio"

I tried that and it is still not working for some reason... Does it matter how you capture? Does that determine how the file is sorted?

I appreciate your help Horse... I can't figure it out either... hence my stupidity post, thanks for trying though.

I don't think so. The DVX doesn't know it's squeezed (it did not do the squeezing; the lens did), so it doesn't include that sort of metadata in the data stream.

You mean by changing the aspect ratio?

Try this: change the aspect ratio on one, then right-click and copy, select all of the others (video part only) and then Paste Event Attributes.

That's not working either. I think the only way to do this is to individually go into every clip and adjust them all to reflect that they are not 4:3... unless it does have to do with capture settings, but I don't think that can be it.

Thanks Barry...

Thank you also to everyone else who helped... This was my first experience with the AA so I didn't know if I was doing something wrong or what... I just kept seeing all these skinny diet coke cans and figured that's why they aren't as bad for you, really skinny drinks

Either way, thank you very much for the help.

Why does this make me think you didn't capture normally?

Anyway, if you highlight them all in "Project Media", you can right-click and change the aspect ratio for all of them at once in the Properties dialog.

hey Yankee, how do you like the adapter. It would be nice to hear some more positive reviews of it.Did they ever get around to replacing the plastic screw with a brass one? I believe that was one of the complaints about it.I ask because I would like to sart using 16x9 as the norm from here on out. While I try and save up funds for an HVX, and use my 100a as a B-cam.Thanks.

Nope, I do just a normal capture, but kept going into the capture mode in Vegas to see if I could adjust the settings... There aren't a lot of options though, but I didn't know if someone had another solution

Mine has the metal screw. I have only done some test shots with it, but reread Barry's book on the adapter and that helped explain a lot of things. Focusing is much different with this glass as most of the posts have said. The image quality is nice though and it's nice to be putting things into 16:9 in the camera and knowing I am getting full resolution and use of the whole CCD. It does cause a weight shift. Normally the camera sits perfectly on a bogen QR plate on the table. With the adapter it is front heavy but with a high cap battery it is perfectly balanced again.

Handling is a little different and getting used to looking at squeezed footage will be something new to consider, but ultimately I am really happy with the adapter. This weekend I am going to try to shoot some outside with the adapter and see how it actually works and how quickly I climb the focus learning curve.

Of course, as with most manual processes in Vegas, you can probably script it.

I don't really know that much about scripting myself; I usually just go to VASST or JetDV and look for one to suit my needs.

(One of these days, I'll sit myself down and learn me some scriptin'.)

I know i may be completely off base, but couldt you use the anamorphic adaptor, then set the LCD to display "squeeze" mode (if you have the 100b). wouldnt that let you see it properly? or would it still be somewhat distorted as that mode is intened for a 4X3 width "16x9" image?

You mean . . . will the DVX then think it's in "squeeze" mode, even though it's in 4:3, and record that metadata? I highly doubt it.

Not sure if you can even set the LCD independently of the record mode, but I've never used a 100B.

Yes you can do exactly that. The 100B lets you force the monitor to a 16:9 aspect ratio, so you can view anamorphic adapter footage in its proper aspect ratio.
