sillhouette effect

how can I create sillhouette lighting where you can still see the edges of the actor but the middle inside part is dark?

Hi, i had a go at tryin to do this awhile ago. I tried it at night, for obvious reasons. I positioned a 1,000,000 candle-strength battery lamp behind the actor, pointing upwards at about a 45-degree agree from the floor, the postioned the camera at the same angle in front of the actor, this way the camera and light aren't pointing at each other. It takes a lil bit of trial an error, but the results i got were not 2 bad, mind i was jusing an old canon handicam to shoot, so i couldn't adjust aperture, DOF or shutter speed.
Hope that was helpful,
Tom

Basically just backlight your actor like you would for hairlight/edge light. Use hard light to avoid spill and make the edges as sharp as possible.

I often light talking heads and interview situations in a studio - when I position the edge lights I turn off all the other lights and I am always amazed at how spooky it looks with just the black silhouette before a black background.
