Silent Hill

It was disapointing.
The camera would simply not stay still! I don't think there was a single shot on sticks in the entire flick. The camera was sweeping, and booming for no real reason. Some of the shots were very cool, but after a while it became very monotonous.

Yeah that was one of the thoughts I had. The camera work gave too much perspective on what was going on. It really took me out of any possible clostrophobic atmosphere that the film could have provided by having an acrobatic bird's eye view of everything.

There were some parts where the complex crane shots worked well, but for most of the film I thought it just killed the mood and wasted the movie budget.

Eh, I don't think the camera actually detracted from anything in the movie. But, that's because I know how it works with the game's atmosphere. Then again, this is a movie and not a game, so it probably should've been approached more like that than a game.

Sad. Maybe it's just too hard to port a game to big screen format.

i heard good reviews so far...

but this biggest thing it seems to be is you need to be a fan of the game, so it doesnt seem to go over so good with people.

I'm a fan of Avary but I don't think this is gonna be a good movie... even worst than doom...

Naaah Doom was pretty bad, I think. First Person Mode? ..> That's way too video game.

I noticed that.

That's pretty high, period. IMDB critics are harsh. I really thought I'd see it around four or five stars, to be honest.

well I just got back from seeing it and I'm like the rest. Story weak.... Sound and Cinematography great, Scary - NO... Disturbing - Yes.... Ending - Dumb..... and I just check the Box office estimates and it made 8 million friday alone taking #1 by double of the next film so it's easy to say there will probably be a follow up... Although it did cost 50M large

Glad to see that I hit a few nails right on the head.

There's already a follow-up planned, by the way. Writing's already commenced. =DDD

this was probably the best game to movie adaptation I've ever seen. But as a standalone movie it could've easily been criticized for cheesy acting and what not.. and yet, this movie is all about atmosphere and it pulled it off VERY WELL. Now, no movie is ever perfect. it's either got it in the drama, the acting, the cinematography or the story. this movie was excellent for it's cinematography and sound design.

I agree with TC about how it being so overly faithful to the game that it had the reverse effect on the movie itself as if it forgot to live on it's own. as a lover of the game, I found it to be geekily exciting to watch.

in the game you run alot. and the footsteps are pronounced... the movie purposefully had the character run like a video game character, making all these footsteps noises to keep you anxious.

all in all, it was a great movie. Loved the music, and the end credits.

btw, RESIDENT EVIL is a great game...

I'm a huge Christophe Gans fan. Brotherhood is one of my favorite flicks.

This story was quite weak. I couldn't stand the little girls acting, and though I'm a big Sean Bean fan, he seemed like he was going through the motions.

What this movie did have going for it was atmosphere. The production design and cinematography were great. It wasn't a scary film, but there was a great sense of dread and tension each time the darkness came - wondering what weird stuff was gonna arise from the darkness.

I'd much rather just watched her go searching around town, running into different creatures and trying to avoid the darkness than sticking to the plot.

I didn't care for the story, but I did get sucked into the world of Silent Hill.

Well, at least something is consistant with all good and bad reviews.

THe Atmosphere... and that's what makes the SIlent Hill games. That's what the game really owns.

just saw the movie today finally, and searched for a thread to post a review. i'm surprised so many people disliked this film. i'm usually pretty hard on films, and although this one had its downs, i thought it was a really good movie

things i didn't like:
1 the lighter when she doesnt seem to be a smoker.
2 the skinning of anna looked pretty lame
3 the climax was a bit over the top and a little too much.
4 some of the acting was i little weak, but not too bad.
5 the use of the word "the darkness" i hate that its used in everything and always sounds stupid. especially in house on haunted hill, which was decent until the end it sucked royally.

things i liked:
1 deffinately great sound and music.
2 the cinematography was great, although it was sweeping and moving all the time, i think that helped it get this unreal feel to it.
3 something i noticed that i really loved was how some parts of the film looked really gamish in the way the colors were adjusted and the way the flashlight looked. the color correcting was absolutely great, because it made it feel like a videogame, and then suddenly it would look very real again. the colors during the darkness were great.
4 i found the plot quite intriguing. it didn't build very fast, but it gave enough information throughout, i started picking up on it when her husband was at the bridge and they said they found her car. and throughout it started to make more and more sense.

although i've never played the games, i still found this movie to be really good. everything was put together well for the most part, and i enjoyed the story too.

I thought this movie had a horrible ending. me and 3 friends walked out of the theater speehless trying to undestand how it ended. did the mother and daughter die? how did they die? We don't know, but we watched the movie during a snowboarding trip, and had a 6 hour drive home to think about it, we still don't know what happened.

*spoiler*

if you think about it, silent hill was like a purgatory of the villiage. the fire had killed them all and they were stuck in the purgatory. the woman and her daughtetr, along wit the cop died in the car crash, and were stuck in the "purgatory world" of silent hill, while her husband was still alive, only saw the "real".

It was suitably creepy and weird and disturbing...the game (only played the 1st one) was really incredibly effective at that whole gradual bleeding of the ghost-world over into the real world, and vice-versa...and I liked the casting, the look-and-feel, the sound editing and the VFX, a lot. Seemed kind of like an under-use of Sean Bean, though, who is *such* a kick-ass actor...

What struck me first off about the whole thing, was that the very first time I saw the trailer, it took less than one second to recognize what it was going to be (didn't even need to see the 'Silent Hill' sign at the end of the first shot). Just the gray-sky-desaturated-colors-flakes-of-ash-floating-in-the-air told me what I was looking at, instantly.

Overall, though, for video-game-to-movie adaptations, "Resident Evil" is still my favorite, so far. Although I can't stop wishing that (a) "Resident Evil II" had never been made, or, failing that, (b) that I had never seen it...

The 'purgatory' idea never occurred to me, but it's neat and does make a lot more sense of the ending, which didn't seem to fit.

I'm a huge fan of the games and I hated the movie quite a lot. I mean I was excited while watching only due to the visuals and sound but everything else sucked so bad.

*****Spoiler******

anyone notice that the main character never really fought or killed anything until the end? where she goes and stabs a regular human? lol

at least pyramid head looked pretty cool but then again i've also seen some crazy lookin pyramid heads from people just cosplaying as them.

I finally got around to seeing this movie on netflicks. I really enjoyed the cinematography. The ending was a little disappointing, but not horrible. I've had a big crush on Radha Mtchell since Pitch Black, so it was a treat to see her in a main role. Overall I was impressed. This is definitely a netflix "must" see if only for the wonderful images.
