There hasn't been discussion of this flick for a few months, so I figured I'd start a new thread.

The trailer can be found here: http://trailers.apple.com/trailers/sony_pictures/silenthill/hd/

More info: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0384537/

For those who don't know, it's a movie based on a video game of the same name. From the looks of it, I'd say this will be the best video game to movie adaptation yet.

I didn't play the games (I'm a Nintendo guy) but from what I hear, they were scary and a lot of fun. From what I can gather from the trailer, it won't disapoint. A buddy of mine saw a 5 minute scene at WonderCon, and said it's some of the best horror he's seen in a long time.

I'll be checking it out tonight. Anyone else seeing it, or already saw an advanced screening?

Can't wait to watch the movies.

The games (all four) were so kick ass. They each carried themselves as individual experiences but were all entertwined in the others stories.

There's no way in hades the movie will be as scary as the video game experience, but Gans did a terrific job capturing the essence of Silent Hill itself. As much as it was based loosely from lots of novels and horror culture (King jumps to mind first of course: Jacobs Ladder and such), the entirety of each is really a different kind of horror.

Haven't seen it, but I'll be in the theatre tonight, for sure. =DDD

Really? I thought this would suck, the trailer just makes it seem like every other 'horror' movie trailer, such as resident evil, and some others, I dunno, maybe I'm not really a 'creature' kind of guy.

It could very well suck, to tell you the truth. But, there's no way it'll suck as bad as Resident Evil. I can't BELIEVE they screwed up such an easy transition. It's not even original, you just pay respects to the original survival horror films and freaking make something good. Nooo.. they wanted to be all different. Stupid Anderson.

However, I did follow SH through pre-production and production, and post... up until now, the release.

I can tell you, and I'll stand by it even if the movie sucks, there was a lot of effort dropped into this movie to cater, not only to fans, but to the general public as a movie all it's own... not just a video game-to-movie port. The enviorments were well chosen, the special effects are NOT used gratuitously... overall everything compliments the final composition... staying true to the game and to the genre at the same time.

I'll just be excited and freaked out to here the siren blaring over the town. That's the scariest sound EVER.

lol, hope you enjoy it, let us know how it was.

I REALLY hope this movie lives up to at least half of how good the games are. That would still make it better than almost all the horror flicks that have been coming out lately. i dont understand how hard is it to make a game to movie transition. Games are basically made the same way movies are, give and take a few details. If i had a say in game to movies in hollywood i would make it mandatory to have the director of the game co-direct the film. Resident evil was a joke, and it had so much potential.
This film looks really good by the trailers though so i have my fingers crossed. And thank god they kept the original composer for the film. He's a genius.
I cant see this opening day, so those who do give us a review when you can!

I'll give a review tonight, as a fan and as a typical movie-goer looking for a thrill.

I will tell you that having the director of the game direct the movie could be a bad idea. A video game and a movie are two VERY separate entities. THey succeed on totally different levels. In a video game, as the director, you have interaction in your arsenal as a way to engage the audience ( which in this case is the player) in the storyline development.

In a movie? Hour n'a half to two hours, skilled actors, and a decent script are the only thing you have going for you. There won't be many video game directors that can handle this well. (And I think that's where Advent Children falls short. As a fan film, great, as a movie.. I desire more by way of story.)

The issue that really needs to addressed and understood is that video games are born from movies, for the most part. Silent Hill, Resident Evil, Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat... they all are derived from films. (Mortal Kombat - Big Trouble in Little China). In that respect, the filmmakers that take on the task of porting games-to-movies need to RESPECT the freaking genre. Doing something that hasn't been done before should not be in the plans. Instead, you'd need to take the base content, base plot, and key character elements and THEN move them to a feasible story that translates to screen well. Fan services comes second to a great film, I think.

With all that said-- This movie has potential to be garbage, but I think it'll blend in with the rest of the decent films as a FILM.. not just a game-to-movie flick like Resident Evil and Mortal Komcrap.

After getting burned on Hostel, I doubt I want to take a chance with Silent Hill. I doesn't look that good.

Hostel never even enticed me. I think because you could tell from the reviews it was going for shock factor.

I'm a Silent Hill fan, a Chris Gans fan, and a [minor] horror fan; I'll be there.

Well, my briggest problem with this film is that I'm not a gamer. I have seen some of the movies adapted from games and they just didn't do it for me. I think it's probably like adapting a book. If you're a fan of the book or writer, you're probably going to be drawn to the movie. In this case, not being a gamer, these movies must stand on their own merit, which to me just hasn't happened yet.

You're absolutely correct. Even as a gamer... I'm embarassed to say I even watched the video game movies. They're just so freaking horrible.

The ONLY reason I have faith in this one (well... there are a lot of reasons) Is because of how deep they've studied the games and paid respects to it's roots... not just it's content. Seriously, if this looked like another Resident Evil, I'd not only be pissed, but I'd pretty much swear off the thoguht of watching another game port.

I'm almost positive that Halo is going to suck hard on all levels.

Or you'll curse the filmmaker for screwing up such a great book. Even though it's may be a good flick, and you know there's no way to translate everything, you're still so livid.

Yes, that's the risk the filmmaker always runs

I feel you Kholi. Thats why i said the director of the the game should co-direct. To keep things on track and not stray off from the original content. Do you really think a game director could do wrose than the movie directors that have tried it so far lol? But you definitely made good points. This is pretty much my last hope for game movies lol. If this is bad then i give up.

It was disapointing.

A few thoughts right off the bat:

When you're playing a video game, you control the action. So when an ordinary housewife does something extraordinary, it's because of you. When you see her doing it many, many times, with no real lead-in, it's very, very stupid. People complain that when movies are made from video games, they stray too far from the original ideas and suck. I get the feeling that this is the opposite, it stayed very close to the story, and because of that, it didn't work.

The camera would simply not stay still! I don't think there was a single shot on sticks in the entire flick. The camera was sweeping, and booming for no real reason. Some of the shots were very cool, but after a while it became very monotonous.

The script really wasn't very solid, it left you in the dark (pun intended) until the end where they spend 5 minutes in this funky 8mm montage, trying to cover all of the exposition and background that they missed. Cheesy, borderline, predictable dialog.

Most of the scares/ creep-outs can be seen in the trailer.

The effects were pretty good, hit-and-miss. There were a few cringes when dealing with the rusty walls peeling off.

The sound design and music was fantastic. Most of the thrills would have been left dead in the water without it.

The cinematography was pretty damn good. A little muddy in parts, but all in all, it was pretty good. Nothing revolutionary, but pretty good.

All in all, it wasn't worth the hype that I gave it.

*SPOILER*
I'm sure that the end goes along with the game, but the end was so unsatisfying. The hero's journey ends with the return to the world of the living with the elixer of life (or something like that, it's late, gimme a break). I don't mind unconventional endings, in fact, I'm usually all for it. But this one absolutely didn't do it for me. I'll have to reflect on why that is.

Acting: Cardboard

Fan Service: A+

Atmosphere: Excellent

Scares: Non-existant

Disturbing?: Yes.

Sound/Sound-Design: A+, couldn't get better.

Overall Picture: Great. Which actually applies to atmosphere.

--_ Rating from a fan: 8 / 10

--_ Rating from a norm: 6 / 10

--_ Rating for all other game-to-movie translations: 3 / 10 (1 point for effort on all of them).

A step forward for the sub-genre... still a loooooongggg way to go.

-----

And yes, I mentioned what TC just said. The thing that made this better than the rest of the bunch is that it only stayed true to subject matter, not story. (There was never a mother searching for a daughter, and the female cop was more of a plot-device in one, not a side kick.)

Great effort, though I was kind of let down. (I'll be in the threatre tomorrow to watch it again. =DDDD )

TRIANGLE HEAD IS A FREAK!!!

By the way, the ending has nothing to do with the game at all. In fact, it was outright retarded. "Elixir of life". Wtf? That's just not part of the games at all.

Thanks for the reviews, guys. Makes my decision pretty easy. That's time I won't waste.
