Signs in public shots

What would be the rule of thumb when shooting in public places that have brand signs or business signs? Can I use these shots?
 
It may depend on whether your film would qualify such use of the signs under 'fair use'. Then again, it might also be a question of the character of the film -- Disney might not want their logos appearing in a documentary about sex in a travel agency, for instance.

Best bet -- consult a qualified attorney.
