Hi, I've got de Sennheiser K6+ME66. What's better? Use the AA internal batteries or the phantom power supply by the panny?
Thanks a lot. :)

The phantom will give you a little bit of a better sound. I don't recall why that is though, someone who knows electronics can field that part.

If you've got phantom power available--it's always preferable to use it. Battery power is fine with fresh cells, but as batteries run down the voltage will drop and degrade the signal. Phantom power provides a nice constant voltage and you neevr have to worry about dead batteries.

Until the battery in your phantom power supply or mixer dies.

It's all relative. You can go either way. A battery in your mic will last at least a day, probably more. A phantom power supply or mixer will need the batteries changed at least once, if not twice with constant usage. I've done some A/B testing, and I really couldn't tell a difference. Some people claim they can hear a difference. Maybe they have super hearing, but I don't buy it.

Re: significance of Using the phantom power versus

I've never heard any difference myself, but I'm paranoid about changing out batteries frequently when I don't have phantom. Since we're talking about phantom powering directly from the DVX100, I would rather worry about just the single DVX1000 battery, than an additional battery in the mic. Plus, the current draw from the camera/lcd is much higher than a phantom powered mic, so phantom powering isn't a big worry in terms of burning through a bunch of extra batteries.

This is very true. It's nice that you have the option to put a battery in the mic if you have to. But I agree, it is nice to just have to change one battery instead of two. It really depends on the situation.

Re: significance of Using the phantom power versus

A new battery in the me66 is good for 150 continuous hours. I changed mine about once a month when I was using the mic a lot, and even then I never heard the mic change over the course of battery depletion.

They used to quote seperate figures, but I can't find 'em anymore. The specs that you see for the k6/me66 are the ones from phantom powering. Using battery power lowers the peak SPL by about 5db and the S/N by about 3db. Still, that's nothing you'd EVER hear.

My advice is ANYTIME you have phantom power available, use it.
