Sigma MC-11 adapter is world's 1st to offer full range of AF modes on Sony E-mount

While photographing and filming our way through Sigma's booth this year at CP+ 2016 in Yokohama, one rather understated product may have just stolen the show for a number of Sony shooters, as well as our Tech Editor Rishi Sanyal.

Put simply, the Sigma MC-11 adapter allows the use of Sigma-mount and Canon-mount Sigma lenses, such as the excellent Sigma Art 35mm F1.4, to be adapted to Sony bodies with no autofocus compromises whatsoever. That means Sigma is the first brand of DSLR lenses to support Eye AF and Lock-On AF modes on Sony cameras, as well as smooth phase-detection in video. What's more, they work really well.

Don't believe us? We didn't believe it at first either. Watch the video and see for yourself why this is a huge step forward in realizing truly hybrid camera systems: where you can pair the best lens with the best camera body - for you - without severe compromises. Rishi has been so impressed that he intends to convert his Sigma 35mm Art from Nikon mount to EF mount (it's a good copy), to use with the MC-11 EF-E adapter. Why? Because the combination will be the world's first to combine the sharpness of the 35mm Art with the accuracy and convenience of Sony's on-sensor phase-detect Eye AF.

Pricing and availability of the Sigma MC-11 adapter has yet to be announced, but given Sigma's recent history of reasonably priced, premium products, we expect you'll be in for a pleasant surprise (B&H is taking pre-orders for $249).

The MC-11 Mount Converter enables the use of Sigma Canon EF-mount lenses on Sony E-mount mirrorless camera bodies, and maintains full lens performance, including autofocus and auto-exposure, as well as in-camera correction technologies. An integrated LED can be used to display select Sigma lens compatibility with the adapted camera body, and the adapter also supports in-camera image stabilization. In order to maintain a high degree of image quality, the interior of the adapter is flocked to reduce reflections, and it also retains full EXIF data to benefit post-production and file management.
Compatibility Cameras - Sony a7-series, a6000-series, a5000-series, and NEX-series mirrorless camera bodies.

Lenses - This adapter is compatible with Sigma's Canon EF-mount versions of the following lenses: 24-35mm f/2 DG HSM Art, 24-105mm f/4 DG OS HSM Art, 120-300mm f/2.8 DG OS HSM Sports, 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Sports, 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Contemporary, 20mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art, 24mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art, 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art, 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art, 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Contemporary, 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art, 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM Contemporary, 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM Contemporary, 50-100mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art, and 30mm f/1.4 DC HSM Art.

Interesting because the first demo video released for this adapter (and the only one I've seen so far) showed it hunting and focusing rather slowly compared to, say, a metabones on the A7Rii using PDAF only. I'd like to think that it was just because they were testing contrast mode in that example (the hunting was reminiscent of contrast detection movement), but the example shown here wasn't clear enough to prove that right or wrong. In fact, the only time he shifts focus off to the side and back, it looks like it might have been behaving slowly again.

Also, while I was initially excited about the prospect of this adapting other EOS lenses as well, I'm starting to wonder more and more if this really will only work with lenses they have data for (ie. only Sigma lenses, unless Sigma decides to build profiles in updates for other Canon lenses, but why would they?). I watched this hoping we'd see him try an EOS lens on it, but no dice. :(

I have been thinking about getting the Sigma 18-35 f/1.8 lens with a EF mount, so I can use it on my 7D & C100 at work. But I also have a NEX-6 w/ a Fotga EF adapter that works fine, but is a lot slower on AF than native a Sony E mount lens.

If this adapter could make the Sigma 18-35 work great on both Canon & Sony bodies, that would be fantastic. Extra bonus points if Sigma lenses will have the super fast auto-focus on the Sony A6300. Really neat stuff.

Edit: The next question would be, how well does this work with other lenses? Like does the adapter still offer some functionality with a Canon 24-105 or Tokina 11-16?

Sigma isn't marketing the adapter for Canon lenses so I would think it will be hit and miss and probably more miss. We all know how bad the Metabones is......

It's just a matter of time before Sigma comes out with FE mount lenses for the Sony a7 series cameras. They have been making a few APS-C E mount lenses and just came out with the 30mm F1.4 but it has no IS and there are no APS-C E mount bodies with IBIS . I think Sony will be coming with a higher version of the APS-C a6300 with IBIS like the a7 II series (a8000 ? ).
