*Sigh* CobraCrane/length question!

I just got my Bogen 3046 + 501 set a couple days ago (sweeet!)

For the price, it looks like a CobraCrane is right for me. I know there are some issues with weight and the 501, but I can handle it.

My question - what would be more practical:
CobraCrane I Plus = 10'
CobraCrane I and a 3.3' extension = 8.5'

I could definitely use as much length as possible, but transporting a 10' object may be interesting.

Any first hand advice?

Not really the first hand advice you're looking for but did you look at Kessler Cranes? I was researching them awhile ago and I think the Kessler breaks down into about 3 ft. sections. I'm not sure about that 501 head though.

The Cobra Crane + breaks down into two sections. One a little longer than 5 feet the other a little shorter (with attatchment).

I have the Kesseler 8' which breaks into two 4' sections it has double rails not single like the Cobra I. This is very important as that 6.5lb camera will sway in a single rail crane as you try to stop any panning motion above a very slow speed. Double rails are better especially out of doors with any wind. The Cobra II is double railed but more expensive. Also the Cobra cranes are made of steel not aluminum and are heavier. The Cobra is a good crane but after the research I am really happy with the quality of the Kessler and its functionality.

They have a lot of add on accessories to enhance their crane for various uses. I have the 8' kit and added the 3' ext (makes a 5.5' crane) for shooting in tight locations. The 8' foot is $399.00. They also offer a 12' for $599.00 that converts to an 8'. Contact Eric for details.

I am not big at product endorsements but this has provided a whole range of shots that add production value for my clients and the thing is simple to use, professional looking, and high quality. I guess you can tell I am a satisfied customer:). I have used this on a 501 and now on a 503 head. I just ordered the Kessler Swivel head which I will mount on a dedicated tripod for the crane. It won't permit manual tilting but is very sturdy and stable. Remember the 501 is not a true fluid head and has teflon friction pads that will wear over time. The crane weight will possibly accentuate that. Certainly it will not hurt for now to use this and until you can afford to upgrade the head to one that handles more weight. I include crane shots more now so that is the reason I am purchasing the heavy swivel head. If I need tilt capability I will simple put the crane on the 503 as needed.

Hope this helps

The CobraCrane I Plus? Hmm. B&H states that it folds down into... 10'.

It would make sense for it to.
