Sideways

Let me ask you fellas something; out of all of the films released last year; which ones deserve to be in the:

Top 5 Nominations?

Best Picture?

All of these from 2004 I felt were better movies overall in their own right and my awards are listed after each:

2046 - best cinematography
The Aviator - best all of the above
Befor Sunset - best love story
The Bourne Supremacy - best action
Closer - best acting
The Motorcycle Diaries - best story
Garden State - tie for best new filmmaker
Finding Neverland - best tearjerker
Maria Full of Grace - best oh she took one balloon too many moment
The Machinist - best actor committment to a role, cinematography
Mean Creek - best wicked kids movie
Primer - tie for best new filmmaker, best mindf*ck of a plot
Spider-Man 2 - best comic book adaptation
Undertow - best hick/chase movie
Team America: World Police - best comedy
Shaun of the Dead - best comedy/horror/action
Birth - best most disturbing concept
Man on Fire - best stylized denzel washington movie

But in an Oscar-nominated world I suppose the best picks/noms would be: Aviator, Motorcycle Diaries, Maria Full of Grace, Finding Neverland, and Closer

I mean how many beer drinkers think that "Old School" should have been nominated for Best Picture?

Bud (and every other American macrobrew) isn't beer.

Nice!

I liked this film, just wanted to throw out my friends and my favorite line:

Jack: Do not drink too much. Do you hear me? I don't want you passing out or going to the dark side. No going to the dark side!

(I've had many a night where my friends yell me this line)

haha i loved this movie. also the scene with the naked guy running toward the car was great hahah

This movie seemed pretty forgetable to me. I didn't find it to be exceptionally funny, moving, or visually pleasing. They had some nice looking shots, but nothing spectacular. There was some funny moments, but no gut busters. Some self-loathing divorced guy and his buddy go around drink wine for week before the buddy gets married. They're both kind of pathetic and neither has a major breakthrough. Just kind of blah.

Most overrated movie of 2004.

I'm just thinking in relative terms;

The Middle Age (fast approaching) dudes; one getting married (and a has been actor or never have been) while the other is realizing The Dream (a published author) is never gonna happen (or at least that window is closing) and is still not over a divorce from the love of his life.

Why would anyone get it if they can't relate? (Generally speaking as always)

With an RT 96% Rating you gotta kind of ask "Why don't I get it?"

I'm 28. I might not be middle aged, but I've seen a few dreams fade. Haven't been divorced, but I've had some serious relationships go sour. I can relate. Maybe not on the same level as others, but there wasn't anything that I didn't get about this movie. I thought it was a nice movie - pretty funny. I didn't think it was a great or particularly memorable movie.

As for the RT 96% rating, why should I ask my self "why don't I get it?" based on that. So, I can convince myself that I like a movie just because others do?

I'm 30 and can relate to some of the movie's points big time but besides certain scenes I still didn't like the movie that much.

I am no fan of Alexander Payne, by any means;however, I must say that I am just amazed at how much I like this movie. It's absolutely hilarious with great performances. It's funny because everyone who I know personally, has said that they didn't like it. What a surprise to find out that I totally dig it.

Great characters, average cinematography, decent score (very fitting). The funniest part about me liking it: I don't drink alcohol!!! :) Go figure.

I really wanted, and actually expected, to love this movie, but I didn't.

And I am a 40 year old (thus far) failed writer who likes to drink. So, I am the demographic for this film. Still, I found it lacking.

Part of this, I believe, is that it was hyped as a comedy, but it was not very funny. That is not to say that it did not have funny moments. But stretching mild amusement between scenes of selfish, self-absorbed dialogue is not a comedy. Maybe if I knew what I was in for before I watched it, I would have felt differently.

The writing was good. I enjoy well-written dialogue, and this movie had plenty of that. Too much, in fact. There were 2 scenes that were deleted (the DVD has first rate features) that would have given us an immense amount of insight into Miles' character without a word of dialogue: The scene where he chucks out The Bible, and where he goes to look for the dog he hit. Those two (very brief) scenes would have shown his hopelessness and his reluctant compasion, respectively. These seem to be the themes of his personality. It's a movie, which means, that if you can show, then don't tell. Otherwise, it's a play that just happens to have a camera rolling. A great opportunity was abandoned in choosing to edit those shots.

I thoroughly enjoyed the acting. The performances were nuanced and believable, with the possible exception of Jack's emotional breakdown. But that may have been intentional. The guy is a shallow, selfish man who happens to be an actor. He may have just been playing for effect to get his way.

I did relate to these people and the relationship between Miles and Jack. I have been on the Miles end of that type of friendship; forged in the past and existing only because of that past, not because of any common ground in the present. There is a loyalty that I can respect, up to the point where your friend is destroying what he claims to be encouraging. You can argue that Jack is good for Miles; trying to encourage him to believe in himself and to take a little risk. You can also argue that Hitler built the Autobahns. Big deal. It is a self-motivated action that offers little compensation when compared to what he takes from Miles. When he is telling Miles that he respects the fact he doesn't approve of him going home with the waitress, I kept thinking that he doesn't get it. Miles doesn't approve, but that's not what is really bothering him. The real issue was that he took his friend up to spend a week together and has hardly gotten to see him due to Jack's selfish behavior. That thought doesn't seem to enter Jack's mind.

I was hopeful for Miles and Maya and that is a sign of a good story. When you care what happens to these people, you are hooked. But in this case i was barely hanging on to get to the end. Watching people make the same mistakes over again is something I see in my everyday lfe, and frankly, there is little more depressing than that. Certainly, in this context, it isn't very funny.

I liked Miles, most of the time, and I found myself rooting for him. He and Maya took a chance on each other, getting out of the little (somewhat) comfortable emotional boxes they had built for themselves. That was the redeeming element to this story for me. It showed some hope.

I liked the acting, a few moments and a lot of the dialogue. But I fail to see why this film was so raved about.

I liked the movie. I didn't think it was GREAT but did think it was good. The writing was well done. Acting, too. I'm into wine so I could relate on that level...ABM :)
