Shutting Down Conversation & Debate

I find it absolutely ridiculous, immature, and weak that the antiwar films thread was closed. People who come to this site are usually in love with filmmaking or film watching in general. Most of the time people watch films to escape from reality, especially in these nasty days of war. When the rare opportunity comes up to engage and discuss the topical events of our lives, or our shared history, and discuss films trying to use real substance to better understand our murderous human behaviour...I think we have a real opportunity to alter our persprectives, albeit just for a little while.
For whatever reason, discussions are ended here for the sake of moderators' not agreeing with things or getting upset at others' opinions that don't align with their own.
If this site is going to continue to grow and be a well-rounded, substantive site that promotes constructive debate its moderators' are going to have to stop being so emotional and reactionary.
Why not attempt to nudge them back to a more constructive area if you feel things are getting nasty? Shouldn't that be the challenge? If the conversation isn't going the way you want it to, figure out how to get it back to a place where people are communicating with eachother and sharing ideas, even if they don't align.
I am not trying to justs complain or point fingers, I would absolutely love this site if discussions could be guided and helped rather than reacted to with such obvious disdain and contempt for others' opinion.

In many online forums, when their is a successful moderator, I get the sense that they are always their helping things along, even if they don't inject many replies of their own. They just have a presence. Sometimes, I get the impression that certain moderators' don't play that role. Instead I feel like they are just another user, albiet one with more power.

We tried to handle political topics in the past but people took it personally and the bad blood spilled into other threads. We've lost valuable users because of political topics. We just don't go there. If you want to go there, there are other forums that handle those topics.
