Shutter Speeds

Is anyone else sick of some shooters using high shutter speeds all the time? I think some people use shutter speeds instead of ND filters whenever possible. I see this in ENG shooters a lot and it just makes some stuff look too jerky and artificial.

It bothers me. What's wrong with a little motion blur, people?

(I don't want to link to any specific examples because I don't want someone to think I'm attacking one particular person.)

Ah well, my rant for the day is done.

You may need examples. Are you talking about semi-professional to non-professional, as in newbies? Or big Hollywood films?

Usually when it's shot on film they tend to shoot at 1/48 shutter (or 180 degree), and that's become a bit of a standard. When people try to mimic the film look with digital they also do this as well.

If anything, either inexperience, or just going for a different look may be a reason for the increased shutter. Like you said, there's ND filters.

Gonna need examples though cause I can't think of a film that does this.

I've used high shutter speeds for aesthetic/stylistic purposes. But only once in a while. I think it can look interesting.

Yeah, I should include examples, but like I said, I don't want seem like I'm attacking anyone. Especially since I'm still far from an experienced shooter.
Most of the stuff I have in mind is from ENG shooters with <5 years of experience.

And I'm not saying that shutter speeds shouldn't be toyed with -- I'm not saying this at all. I'm just saying that, in my recent experience, it seems that people are not using them as judiciously as they could be.

High shutter speeds. You mean like Crank?

I think Max means the Crank movies. Shot on XH A1s and some consumer Canons at a shutter speed of 1/1000 indoors and 1/2000 outdoors.
