ShowTime's Masters of Horror

I don't have Showtime, but I hear that Coscarelli did a great job. They better release these on DVD, because Carpenter and Argento are involved and I'll be pissed if I don't get to see them.

Archor Bay produced the series with Show Time distributing for a fixed period. The full uncut versions of all 13 movies will be released on DVD by Anchor Bay!

Didn't you read your Fango, Horse?

PS
Coscarelli did a really great job with his. I liked it a lot. Some great shots. There was one or two I didn't like because they were soooo CGI, and strangely shots I didn't think needed any touching up, but on the whole it was a really solid piece. I was curious to see what Coscarelli was going to pull out of his hat and I was happy.

It was really surprising. I didnt suspected that it would be such a excellent short from Coscarelli.

Yeah, I have to say I didn't know what to expect. I've watched it twice now. I like it a lot. The story is a little muddled but he did a great job directing it. The shots he used, the pacing, everything was dead on. I really liked it. He did an excellent job.

And I LOVE Angus!!! He was sooooooo cool.

The series opened strong. Hope all 13 are equally as good!

Now that the first season of "Masters" has come to a close, I thought it would be interesting to sum it up.... OK. I just read Tony Timpone's rave summary in his column of the latest Fangoria and couldn't have disagreed more.

What makes Masters really interesting (to me) is that the Masters are given free reign to create whatever they want in a 60 min running time. Its almost like one of those assignments in school... here's the topic, everyone go... and then seeing what different people made of it...

Some of the script choices were just horrendous... they were either really boring or had a faint glimmer of potential before falling flat.

There were several standout episodes worth seeing, maybe 4 of the 13. The two best ones I thought were Coscarelli's and Carpenter's. They had the best stories and executed them well.

Argento's was boring. You saw the end coming from the opening.
Landis' was eh. The deerwoman was hot, but aside from that not much to recommend it.
Gordon's Witchhouse was also just ok. Hard to adapt Lovecraft I think and it just felt flat.
Garris' had potential and just went south quickly. Suffers from bad horror movie ending disease.
Tobe Hooper's was trippy, but what else can you expect from him?
Dante's was ok. Too political and too in your face. At 30 mins it would have been more effective.

All in all, it was an interesting experiment that I'm glad got a second season. Maybe this time around we'll get to see a Romero made Masters episode.

My only hope is the season two Masters pick better material to show their artistry with. Crap is still crap, even in the hands of a Master....

For those who don't have ShowTime, Anchor Bay starts releasing the Masters on DVD in March with Carpenter's Cigarette Burns and Gordon's Dreams in the Witchhouse.

I have Showtime and Tivo and don't know why in the hell I haven't recorded these. The only one I did see was "Fair Haired Child." I can't remember the director's name, but he did crap like "Fear Dot Com" and the "House on Haunted Hill" remake. Anyway, I was kind of caught off guard by its creepiness. The demon was pretty cool and frightening enough for my wife beg me to change the channel.:) I can't judge this episode against the others, but I enjoyed it. If it happens to be one of the weakest in the series, I should be really into the other episodes.

I forget who did Fair Haired Child. It was pretty good. One of the better ones. The EFX were really good throughout the series. I liked what the EFX house did.

I'm most interested for the DVD of Takashi Miike's piece "Imprint" as it was to extreme even for Showtime. I hope they release the whole show in a boxset instead of just seperate DVDs, although the boxes do look pretty cool.

The EFX was KNB on all of them FYI.

Yeah thats the one I am most interested to see. I'm sure it will be the big bonus on the complete DVD collection. If not, someone at Anchor Bay is an idiot.

Yeah I knew it was KNB but at the time I was typing I drew a blank. Thanks for the refresh!

I hear they're offering Showtime shows on Itunes. Anyone know if this series is part of that deal? Cause all i really want is to find that Miike episode. I've loved most of his stuff since i saw my first episode of MPD psycho.

Since the Miike episode didn't air on ShowTime, I doubt they would make it available on iTunes...esp. since they felt it was too violent, etc. If it shows up anywhere, it will be on DVD as a bonus.

I've been watching these for the last few weeks since I discovered what they were... I live in Canada so I'm shocked that the company that's rebroadcasting the episodes is doing it in sync with the US.. (normally it seems to take a year to past customs)
a couple of the ones I saw blew but I look forward to the Miike episode aswell....
