Just starting to think about cutting a showreel together...yikes!

I've had a quick stab and wanted to see what people made of it?

http://www.lafamiglia.tv/showreel.mov - This is now the new version

I've output it to QuickTime and boosted the gamma a little (it looked too dark on a PC)

Also the final scene needs to be recut...I need to go back and find the source footage.

Cheers

I think your lighting is amazing! I really like it. As a showcasing of your cinematography, I think the reel could use some help. As a whole, I think it's a bit long, and I think the things that make it seem even longer are the fact that you use multiple shots that are very similar in a row and the music is very mellow.

At 0:57, I would pick two angles at the most to use and show each only once.
At 1:10, I'd use only one of these shots.
I'd shorten the shot at 2:28, it's 28 full seconds long.
I'd cut all of the shot at 3:40 and start with the shot going around the room, and then also cut the repeat wide at 4:21
At 4:25, I'd only pick a few of these shots and not repeat so much.
The last sequence of shots starting at 5:16 I'd put somewhere in the middle of the reel and cut out your fades to black, just jump from shot to shot.

As for the nudity, I'd consider cutting it. Not for those that would be offended, but by those that might be distracted from what you are actually trying to get them to pay attention to. I think if you cut the first overhead shot of the girl in the tub and keep the rest, you still get to enjoy your lighting and the candidness of the scene, you just aren't showing her breasts.

For the stripper scene, there are only a few instances of nudity that I think if cut would not have a bearing on the cinematography as a whole for these shots. I think you can have the shot that starts at 3:04 end at 3:11 without the zoom in on the breast and the shot that starts at 3:20 could end at 3:32 instead of showing the naked girl (who is looking at the camera and crew anyway :Drogar-Happy(DBG):)

Overall I think it's really great, I'd just consider different music and tighten up the editing a bit, and you'll really emphasize your awesome skills much better. Good luck and thanks for sharing with us!

Thanks for taking the time to look at it and giving such detailed notes.

I agree with most of your points...I will look at those suggestions and see what I can do. I just cut that together very roughly and wanted to get some initial comments so thanks very much.

Not sure what's been changed, but here's my comments. Understand that I'm in similar position and comments I'm giving you about yours are mostly comments people have made to me about mine:

1) Shorter
2) Cleaner (as DeadEyes mentioned there are elements distracting from your strengths.
3) FOCUS (What are you trying to do with your reel? If your trying to show that "i can make a bunch well lit images that look 'cool' ", then you're working with something successful. If, rather, you're trying to show people that you can tell a story visually [as i'd hope so], then how can you do that without showing us a story? I'd suggest showing us a piece as a whole, or a selection from that whole.)
4) Suggest your a team player. I would include the sounds from the shots regardless of your decision to use a whole piece or not. In doing so, you're suggesting that you're proud of the people that you've worked with including sound designers and that you believe in the scripts you've been asked to shoot by including their dialog. Otherwise, why are you shooting these projects?

Otherwise, I agree with Deadeyes - you're lighting is generally solid - but your framing seems generally weak. I enjoyed the use of your camera angles, but I got distracted by all the symmetrical frames.

best,
