Show us your FACEBOOK!!!

Hey all --
I just started a fan page a couple days ago for my ::ahem:: fan film. :banned:

I was hoping that everyone could post their film/short film FB sites and list the software they used? Not your personal pages, just fan pages.

Right now I'm using Lujure's free single page app. Unfortunately you have to pay $200 to not have the branding using their stuff. I don't mind the branding too much, though. I tried to size the Welcome image to block out the bottom advert.

So yeah -- Show 'em up!!

You didn't design a welcome page then? I usually like the look of them on FB.

Also, FYI you have two YT tabs and one is blank and the other one is showing an error message.

**thanks for that info Kyle. Very interesting. - I guess follow up questions would be who or how did you do the design (ie. build specific page that have unique links in them), and what kind of costs ballpark does it take to get 200,000 fans??

No one is listing their software. Though I think Kyle is the only one whose page has an app attached.

What software, Kyle?

Staven -- Brandon and Kyle both have religious-oriented films which probably helps the word-of-mouth appeal. (E.g. it's something that's good and it's something that the viewer is -potentially- extremely passionate about).

The best way to garner a lot of fans as an indie (from what I've seen) is to do something on a topic people are passionate about and do it well. Religion, Politics, Children in the Sex Industry, etc.

I was talking about FB apps and the different ones people use on their pages. I didn't notice that you had any, though, except for the YT app, but that's FB provided, right?

Basically FBML was the big game in town app wise...but now Facebook has removed that app and forced everyone to move to iFrames. Anybody with a previously running FBML application stayed active but they removed the ability to start anything new.

I won't share too much specific information on costs, but it's in the thousands. We were running money on Ads, which can cost you a ton, or a little depending on the Ad, its click through rate, etc. I've spent about 7 months really learning how to get my costs down and in the end we've done very well. None of this would matter much of course if we weren't getting our money back which I'm pleased to say we are.

The issue as well is even if you can get your costs down and lots of clicks, it doesn't mean much unless those clicks equal fans. Our film has gotten much higher click to fan ratios then I've been able to duplicate on other films that I'm doing Ads for. Either way a good response has been anywhere from 25% all the way to 75% and maybe higher occasionally.

Don't forget that even 1000 fans who are extremely active on your page can be much more powerful than 50,000 who are occasionally giving your product/film/page thought. You need to post often and keep the posts potent as to not annoy fans but still keep them interested. Quotes, links, reviews, etc. anything...just keeping the fans of your page active because the longer you wait and your page loses credibility the less prominence your status posts can get on the walls of your fans. Even with the setting of your news feed properly set so you don't just see the people you interact with most, I still see favor being given to pages/people I post on most often.

Hopefully this was helpful...

Thanks Kyle, yes that was helpful. I didn't word my question about costs very well, but you answered it the way I intended to ask.

Last follow up questions would be:

What did you include on the actual ad? Picture of dvd? Synopsis of story?

And then, has facebook been the best marketing tool for your project?

I looked at doing a facebook ad, but was a)somewhat confused on what to put, and b)thinking I should wait until I have something tangible like a web series on the go before doing one.

We used Facebook ads for awhile too... only for a month or two. We spent much less than Kyle, under 1k, but we saw a very big bump in fans during that time as well. And now the page kind of markets itself... we have a steady stream of about 500-800 fans added each week... it's pretty amazing.

Yeah I don't have a personal FB account, so it's not me doing it.

FB might be a really good way of promoting your film, but I don't think my film will live or die depending on me getting a personal FB account or not.
Also, I can't do EVERYTHING myself.

And with regards to *staying active* I think that going to pages that have a similar theme/genre as your film/product and posting there *as your fan page* can be a good thing as well. If your SN is "Power - The Official Movie Page", when someone responds to your post or comment, they might also go on ahead and click your SN and take a look at your page.

A good ad usually hits at a .35% click-thru rate. So a 75% click-to-like ratio @ 10 cents per 1K (70 cents unique), your cost per click would be on about 30 cents, which means each "like" costs about 38 cents.

5K in purchased fans = $1900

Obviously if you have something that can really catch fire and only need to purchase your first 1K, then you're only looking at a few hundred bucks.

I'm newer to all this, but I think getting friendly with FB folks who have 500 or more friends themselves and then asking them to promote your page is a pretty solid and cheap way to get a lot of fans quickly, but like Kyle mentioned, it's more important to have quality fans long term.

The key in all of this, though, to sort of double your investment dollars is to have your landing page be the video (YT) you want views on. That way you're getting nearly ALL of your clicks to equal views and still maintain that 75% (or thereabouts) like percentage. Just make sure that they're watching your video on your FB page and not being routed to YT.

And sometimes numbers equate numbers equate interest. Never underestimate the pack mentality.

;)
