Show Reel

I have been invited to submit a show reel. What should the reel consist of? How long should it be? Anything else I should know? TIA.

I know you, Le Grouchobeer, and have seen some of your machinima films. You're quite the brilliant fellow.

Unfortunately, I don't know much about show reels, but I imagine a dvd of 30-60 minutes displaying a wide sample of your talents is the ticket.

Maybe someone else here with more experience can be of help. Good luck!

yep, people say the shorter the better, but sometimes its hard to cut yourself down. There are lots of ways to approach it. Some people put whole segments from various stuff they shot, some people just piece together random awesome shots, It really depends what you are trying to sell yourself as.

With mine, I try to say that I can handle pretty much anything and that I've done a ton of stuff. http://www.01productions.tv/new/reel.html

For feature film work in Hollywood it's down around ~ 3 minutes.
Everyone is in a hurry and there's often a mountain of reels.

If it's a DVD you could have a couple of different sections available on the menu. For a burger commercial the wankers want to see your hamburger reel... no imagination.

Don't let a great 3 minute reel continue on to your older, lame stuff. Leave them wanting more.

Also don't obsess too much about a killer soundtrack if it's a reel for camera or effects work. The experienced producers usually turn the audio off so they can concentrate. I use a song just so I know when my edit has reached 3 minutes.
