Apparently the Academy is shunning the idea of giving an Oscar to the Best Stunt. Personally I think it's a great idea and most deserving; think of all of the amazing films that had some insane stunts in them.

Well at least they give out the following:

Best Short

I make shorts; but an Oscar for one? And more often than not for one no one has ever heard of.

Best Animated Short Film

Need I even say anything?

Best Foreign Language Film

What? Save that for Canne

Best Animated Feature

Come on; it's either Best Picture or it is not Best Picture. Period.

Documentary Feature
Documentary Short Subject

First; save the Documentary Award for television or news. Second; Best Short Doc? How about a Best Short Animated Documentary?

Look; if your're going to have these and Cotume, and Makeup, and Art Direction and especially the Animated crap hook up the Stuntpersons. We have Sound and Sound Effects Editing; we have Visual and BEst Special Effects; hook up.

AND NO POSTING COMMENTS IN HERE UNLESS YOU VOTE AND PARTICIPATE!

Without a doubt! Those guys go through a lot of planning and pain to carry out filmmakers' dreams. They deserve to be recognized for it.

Hell yes. What they do is an artform, imo. They need recognition as much as any of the other disciplines.

I agree that stunt perfomers do not get near the recognition that they deserve. However with digital effects so prevalant, it is getting harder and harder to tell what is a stunt and what is an effect. Most of the AMPAS members make their descisions by watching a film and differentiating a stunt from an effect may not be possible just by watching a screener. They may vote for a stunt that was heavily agumented by CG and overlook a more complicated live action stunt, that was more deserving. If they could settle this issue, I think it would be a very cool category.

A stunt performer award would be great. Consider all the work Sala Baker did on Lord of the Rings. He played at least 3 major characters, and numerous minor characters, almost all of which required stunts. The amount of work that goes into something like that deserves to be rewarded in a big way.

I think it would be hard to pick an individual stunt, but I definitely agree the stunt crew should get credit. For Visual Effects they consider the technical merits too, so it could work like that. For example in Bourne Supremacy they used that new car rig to get shots of Matt Damon in the car whilst it crashes... pretty cool stuff, just a bit badly directed IMHO.

Considering they risk their lives, it only seems fair!

I voted..... And I read the article. I dont feel the Academy gave nearly an adequate reason for not including them.

It's ridiculous to think these guys get overlooked.

It would make the show way more exciting to showcase the best stunts of the year.

Seeing as though they recognize achievement in CGI(best visual effects), I can't understand how they don't recognize practical effects.

Stunt guys are some of the most talented people. It really is a shame they don't get more recognition. Some of the things these people are capable of are simply amazing.

A film is a total team effort and as such each part is a link in the chain from directing to catering to location scouting, in my opinion all departments should be eligable for some sort of award. I think John is right, some stuff like foreign language, documentary and animation could just as well be served elsewhere to make more room for catagories with a closer connection to the art of making classic feature films. Stunt artists would fall right into this catagory IMO.

stunts are often the parts we remember most, and one of the most difficult to pull off successfuly. there's no reason they shouldn't get recognition like everybody else.
