Should I Switch to Final Cut

I have been working with Premiere for 4-5 years and now I'm ready to move to HD. I'm not talking about HDV, I mean DVC_PRO HD. I have checked with ABOBE and they informed me that they don't support the MXF file format which is what DVC PRO HD is when capturing? So now I have to decide whether to go with Final Cut on the Mac; Or just try to stick it out with Premiere. I have seen some of the third party plugs for MXF, but they are extremely expensive. Any Advice given will be greatly appreciated. personally I Think it time to go with the Mac.

Those expensive plugins/codec you refer would be CineForm and Raylight?

Granted FCP is a great NLE, just also factor in these costs: buying a new computer (you may have to anyway), buying the FCP software (whereas you may own PP2 or only need an upgrade) and there will be a transition period to learn FCP. How much does that cost? Raylight and CineForm Connect HD are only about $200, however, you would do better with CineForm Aspect HD (over Connect HD) with PP2 for integration and performance.

Good luck deciding.:)

I would definitely not recommend you making such a jump at this time unless you *have to*.

For Premiere, you could add a $195 RayLight plug-in and be editing native MXF files today. For the Mac, you'd have to buy a Mac and FCP, to the tune of $3,000 or more. I don't see how you could classify RayLight as "extremely expensive"? Surely you're talking about Axio ($4,000), but RayLight is $195.

Second, both programs could see a major update in April at NAB. I'd wait until then if possible; I mean, if Premiere announced native MXF support, and FCP announces FCP6 and it still doesn't have MXF on the timeline, then wouldn't you feel a bit silly for having dumped all your Premiere stuff to move to FCP?

If you want to move to a Mac for other reasons, that's all good. But if it's specifically for HVX editing? That's not a move I'd recommend making right now, at least until we know what both companies plans are for NAB.

Thanks for advice I was actually thinking about the Axio le which is about $4000, However I will be looking into raylight. i got very upset with the tech support folks at ADOBE because when I would ask for advice from them they would always give my something that just wasn't helpful to me at all. The really sad thing about it was that I have an annual subscription just for tech support & I'm not getting my money's worth from it even with software problems. I will go and look for the Raylight. Once again thanks a lot.

Palone5,

WAIT!!!

I can't say more than that, so I'll say listen to Barry and see what comes up. A very reliable little bird MAY have told me a few things that are very intriguing ... maybe not. If you can, get the Cineform plug ins, and make a decision when the dust settles.

Have to agree with the Master, I have two macs and yet I am still using a PC. Im hoping after NAB and FCP 6 details the PC can go.
