should I film 24p for use on a UK DVD?

hi all,

I have a GH1 and HMC151 which have the option of shooting 25fps or 24fps.

To get a more filmic look would you guys recommend filming and editing in 24fps (or 720 60fps) instead of 25fps (or 720 50fps) or will i run into problems somewhere down the line?

The human eye cannot differentiate between 24 and 25 fps. If 25p is your required output, don't worry about 24fps.

Not really - most DVD players can handle 24p.
But there would be no big benefit regarding motion look to 25p.

On the other hand you risk, that some players or screens try to convert to 25p and that can be a disaster to watch.

lovely. Will go for 25p and therefore when I buy a 2nd HMC150 I can buy the slightly cheaper 154 (25p only) instead of another 151 (24 & 25p)

thanks guys

Interesting...mine most certainly can. It's one of the things that bothered me the most about all the early AF-100 footage. It was all 25p and drove me nuts! I can tell the difference in a blink. 25p just looks "wrong" IMO. Maybe I'm a robot.

I'm in the UK and I have been playing with GH2 and HMC151 in different formats. My new Panasonic HD TV and BluRay recorder can handle AVCHD straight from the SD cards, but not in 24p. It's strange, as when I put a BR movie in, it says 24p a the top of the screen for a few seconds.

chris do you find the footage matches quite well between those 2 cameras? Do you use any particular scene settings to get them right?

I too can tell the difference between 24 and 25.

So, given lots of different footage playing on a good monitor, not knowing how something was originally shot, played back at the original frame rate, regardless of camera type, shutter speed, DOF, with music and sound at the correct pitch and speed, you can pick out 24p and 25p source material every time without fail? 100 out of 100 shots, not side by side, but every clip a different scene so there was nothing to compare it to? That would be amazing.

I used to work with audio CDs a lot and the industry 'golden ears' at two recording studios claimed they could tell the difference between a CD recorded at 1x and one recorded at 16x. In a blind test they failed miserably.

Now, I can see how some one could perceive the visual difference between 24p and 25p on certain scenes but I very much doubt it could be done on every single scene without fail. I'd like to see it done :)

I just did a test to satisfy my own curiosity. I have 5 DVD players and one Blu-ray player here at the moment (excluding computers that don't really count). 2 of the DVD players failed to play 24p material but would play the 25p variation. One was an older Sony and the other a Teac built in to a TV.

I put my observations in the thread below. I have to shoot 720p otherwise the superior resolution of the GH2 makes itself plain. Matching gamma and colour is not perfect, but I found some settings that were close enough for my purposes.

My concern is that I now need to shoot in 720p which is adjustable fps on the HMC but fixed at 50fps on the GH2 and eventually want to make my own DVD's and BD. I guess I am going to have to convert from 50fps to 24fps for BD at some point and I'm searching the forums for the best advice.

I'd be up for the challenge. I been working in 24p for years now. I can instantly spot something playing at 25fps. It has totally different "feel" to it. Granted I'd probably need to see at least a 3-5 second clip with movement in it to judge accurately. I can see how being in the UK you might be used to seeing 25p AND 24p all the time. But here, we only use 24p so when you see something different it sticks out like a sore thumb.

I watched Enter the Void and I immediately was able to recognize it was 25p. The movement looked a lot smoother.

this is very useful, thanks for that. This basically means that if I buy a GH2 over a 5D then I'd HAVE to shoot 720 50fps. Not including 25p in the GH2 really has ruined everything for me!!
