Hello,
I'm editing a documentary in FCP 4 shot in 24p advanced on the DVX-100. This documentary is originally intended for broadcast television, but also might go to film festivals, hence I decided to shoot in 24pa.
Before, while editing regular quality DV footage, under "audio/video settings" I set my sequence preset to "DV NTSC 48khz- 23.98" and my capture preset to "DV NTSC 48khz- 2:3:3:2 Advanced Pulldown removal". Now I'm editing in Offline RT, and wanting to keep my timeline in 24fps, so I have set my sequence preset to "Offline RT NTSC (Photo Jpeg)- 23.98" and my capture preset to "DV to Offline RT NTSC (Photo Jpeg)". I had to modify the capture preset, as it was by default set to 29.97fps, and made it 23.98 fps.
Now my issue is this, I digitized an hour of footage and made sure the imported footage was in 24fps. All was fine. But then when I wanted to make sure the footage was in sync with the tape, I checked to see if frames in FCP at 01:05:06:11 matched on tape, and realized that 01:05:05:25 on the tape matched. This made me wonder whether I should be digitizing in 24fps mode instead of 23.98fps mode. But when I did a calculation of the difference between 23.98fps and 24fps, if I digitized in 24fps there would be at least a 100 frame or approximately 4-5 sec. difference in the footage, which was not the case because I was at most 16 frames off between tape and FCP.
The question that perplexes me is if the DVX-100 when recording in 24p advanced mode records 29.97 fps on tape, but with 2:3:3:2 pulldown becomes 23.98 frames per second in FCP, should every precise minute on tape match FCP down to the frame? This is very confusing. Any help would be most appreciated.
thank you,
Alex
