Shotlist

End of Fall

I'm not sure if I have the right section or not but I'll give it a shot....

How do you come up with a shot list for a music video, most all music videos are shot out of order... For example:

1A - WS - House
2A - MCU - Girl & Boy
1B - WS - Girl dancing
1C - CU - Roses
1D - WS - House

So the WS Hose scene is the same as 1A, wouldn't I go 1A instead of 1D. I'm really sorry if I am confusing anyone its just I don't even know what I'm doing or anything so if someone can help me out it would be awesome.

It's an important question. Unfortunately, this is a better question for the "Directing" board. Basically, the director and DP (and probably 1st AD) will get together and iron out the schedule. Some general guidelines:

1. Break up shooting by location. It makes no sense to shoot one scene at the beach, run to the city for another scene, then run back to the beach for another scene.

2. Break up shooting by walls. Lighting is the most time-intensive aspect of the production (depending on your talent!). So, if you have a solid set-up facing a certain direction, try to get all the shots that face that direction finished before breaking down and setting up the next wall / direction.

3. Master shot to closer shots. Many DPs can light a master shot and then make smaller tweaks when you move closer (e.g. to the OTS or CUs). Of course, filming the master shot and then closer shots is the traditional method. But if it works...

4. Vertical line breakdown or storyboard. I'm guessing you've done this already. If not, a VLB entails looking at your script and drawing vertical lines through the text to indicate the shots you want and how they'll overlap. It's hard to describe through text, but I'm sure if you googled it you could find some good examples. A VLB basically helps you figure out what shots you need. But since you're doing a music video, I think a storyboard would probably be far more useful.

Hopefully the directing board will be more helpful. The writing forum is mostly catered towards narrative screenplay development.

Thanks Ex, I've done a few of those in class I hate doing the vertical lines. But a story board is what I been working on for the past couple of days.
