I know there is a sticky for this, but not many people answered as to what their choice/preference/already own was. I have the ME66 and love it, and considering getting a Rode next.

Sennheiser Me66

Rode NTG-2

Audio Technica AT897

The Mic is preferably for films. Thoughts?

The NTG-2 is better, but not enough to be worth owning both. Hands down, sell the ME66, buy the NTG-3 and blimp.

I have ME66 - Lame.

I have NTG-2: better than the ME66, but not by much.

I have the NTG-3, and I am amazed.

Oh and you get a free blimp and boom pole over at DVeStore.

I currently use a Rode videomic, but i've been thinking about getting an NTG-2 or 3. For small/fun projects though, a lot of times the boom operator is just a friend or one of the offscreen actors. Do you think it's worth it to pay more for the NTG-3 vs the NTG-2 if the operator isn't highly skilled/knowledgeable about pickup patterns?

The ME-66 sounded great when everyone was still using analog tape. Now it sounds a little thin and a little brash.

Initially I liked the brightness for more intelligibility, but now it sounds hollow to me. It is useless indoors too. Shotgun's aren't really great inside, but the NTG-3 sound's pretty dang nice even in a reflective room, tough I would still use a hyper for that. I had the NTG--3 on my camera for turkey day partying. I walked around the house to different groupings of people and it sounded very nice and natural.

A better mic is always the better choice. It requires no more skill to use the NTG-3 over the NTG-2. The NTG-3 has a very similar character but amore forgiving polar pattern than the acclaimed Senn MKH416.

Get the NTG-3 and be done with it.

{{{{{{BTW: The NTG-2 has the same capsule as the VideoMic. They are the same mic with different connectivity.}}}}}}}}}}

Beyerdynamic MC836.

Of course it's a matter of taste, but for me nothing compares to it when it comes to neutrality in the most diverse situations.

Agreed. I just got an NTG-3 from DVeStore and I am very pleased with it so far.

The free blimp offer ends this month (Dec-09) and is good only "while supplies last" (whenever that is??) The offer is good from any authorized Rode dealer.

But wait! That's not all!

If you purchase from the DVeStore and put "DVinfo" in the coupon code, you get a FREE K-Tec Wired Boom pole valued at 225.00.

I would check to make sure the deal is still on, but It was a few days ago when I did it. So for purchasing one 700.00 mic that sounds like a 1,200.00 mic, I got a FREE blimp and boom worth 525.00.

Not too shabby.

Ask Guy Cochran if the boom pole deal is still on. I got a 9 footer. Pretty cool, only I wish it had a foam handle. I wonder if there is any aftermarket foam handles one can get.

I'm interested in this deal. How do I contact Guy to see if it's still on? I can't seem to find a "Contact Us" link on the website...Silly as that may sound.

Search Guy on this forum and write him a PM. You'll see in his signature that you can PM him for a special quote. But if I were you I would call them. Their "About Us" section was easy to find. You can always get 5% off with "take5" coupon code, but the free boom pole is a much sweeter deal.

Thanks for the info! I didn't mean to imply that their website was silly...I meant that I was silly for not being able to find the info. Just wanted to clear that up because when I read my post again, it wasn't clear. Not that anyone got up in arms about it...I'm just saying

Thanks again!

I got a pair of these shiny new, custom made, boom pole holder attachments the fit around EVERY ONE OF MY fingers. As an added bonus, they keep the cold air off my hands as well.

I just got the Rode NTG3 on Thursday and I already applied for the Rode Blimp special. I got an amazing deal on my Rode NTG3 from Zzounds(price match no questions asked). I will be using it this week coming up. I played around with it at the house and it sounded amazing. Great microphone.

My collection of mics:
Rode NTG3
Rode M3
Audio Technica AT815B
Audio Technica U851R
