Shotgun Mic Placement on Camera

I just received my new shotgun mic. :D It's an Azden 1x and all I could afford. My question is, Where should I place it? There are two options: 1) On the hotshoe (on top of the camera) using the built in Azden shockmount or 2) in the DVX shotgun mic holder (on the side).

I like the mic on top because it's away from all the camera controls and less possible camera noise. Also the shockmount is good. But I have seen other people place the shotgun on the sidemount. What are the advantages of both?

Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Shotgun Mic Placement on Camera

when i have to have my shotgun on the cam i just throw it in the shoe mount in its own suspension . the panasonic mic holder has junk for vibration reduction, and is not that great of a mic holder aside fromn using it with the doofy panasonic mic. .. sorry pany, but that thing falls short. ;)

Re: Shotgun Mic Placement on Camera

Thanks Neil. That's what I thought. The Azden provides a fairly decent shock mount. So far so good.

Re: Shotgun Mic Placement on Camera

With that long barrel, be careful it doesn't droop into frame when mounted in the hotshoe.

I've got the 2X and it does occasionally.

Jeez, Neil, that link made this screen wiiiiiiiiiiiiide.

I always use the shoe. I think the side mount is worthless.

Re: Shotgun Mic Placement on Camera

Neil, Dan, David - Thanks for your opinions. I will stick with the hotshoe.

Re: Shotgun Mic Placement on Camera

I have the Azden 1x and mounted the mic holder that came with the mic on the side holder. before using the panny supplied holder
my mic would woble with movement, now after two little drill holes in the Azden it sit's firm on the side and I can
toss something on the shoe.

Re: Shotgun Mic Placement on Camera

I've got a sennheiser shockmount for the hotshoe that Rush threw in when I got the at 897 from EVS.
I'm just wondering what type of bags you guys use for the dvx. Do you take the shock mount off after
use everytime? I'm looking for a bag/backpack that's deep enough to keep the mic on all the time. So if
I have a run n' gun situation I don't need to fiddle with the hotshoe. Anyone used the kata 502? (this should maybe be a new thread)
