Shotgun Mic help

I'm looking to buy a nice shotgun mic/fishpole setup soon. We've been able to get away with lavs for a while now but our next project requires some walking and talking along with multiple on camera talent. I'm a bit of a novice when it comes to using this kind of setup. I've read some reviews and It looks like the Sennheiser ME-66 is what Im going to go with. My problem is this. I want my crew member to be able to monitor the audio while they operate the mic and not be tethered to the camera. What are my options? Thanks.

You can use a wireless link between your mixer and your camera. Plug a wireless transmitter into the out on your mixer and a receiver on your camera. You will also want to provide the ability for your audio operator to monitor what's being recorded in the camera so you will need another transmitter hooked into the earphone jack of your HVX with a receiver back at the mixer. That way your audio guy can monitor either the camera or the audio source itself. While this set up works it can be a bit risky. That's why so many crews use a hard-line snake between the mixer and the camera.

Another option is for your audio operator to use a field audio recorder and mixer allowing him to do all the audio recording himself instead of sending it to the camera. Of course, you will be faced with syncing audio and video during post by using this option.

I've got a wireless transmitter I can use. (Sennheiser G2). Is there a wireless transmitter for the earphone jack you can recommend?

You can use the plug style transmitter you would normally put on the end of a stick mic. You would just need a mini plug to XLR adaptor cable to run from the earphone jack to the wireless transmitter. You could velcro the transmitter to your tripod or shoulder brace which ever you are using. I'm sure Sennheiser sells this type of transmitter. I use Lectrosonics gear and am not that familiar with Sennheisers wireless equipment. I do use the ME66 however. It has never let me down.
I hope this helps.

I just re-read your original post. Is the only thing you are trying to do is monitor the audio without having your audio operator using head phones out of your camera?

If that's the case most snakes between the mixer and the camera include a jack for plugging into the earphone jack of the camera. This sends the audio signal back to the mixer for monitoring. Snakes typically run anywhere from ten to twenty feet in length.
