Shotgun mic buzzing & Headphones - One side louder than the other

I have a Canon HV20 camera, Sony MDR 7506 headphones, and a Canon ATR55 Shotgun Mic w/ windshield. I was doing a test shoot with my equipment yesterday and noticed two issues.

1) Buzzing... I think I may have solved this problem but want to make sure. I had my Mic mounted to the top of the camera and plugged into the mic port on the camera, I had my headphones attached to the headphone port on the camera. Each time I attach the mic, I hear buzzing in one ear but not the other, HOWEVER... I can get rid of it by simply going to AV/Phones in the Camera's set-up and switch it from AV to Phones, then the buzzing goes away. No problem. It's just that I have to keep doing this every time I record something with the mic. Mind you, even with the buzzing, this DOESN'T affect my recordings at all for some reason (thank God). I just wanted to check if this was normal, that's all.

2) I can't seem to find a way around this one. The volume in my left headphone is louder than the right. Once again, this doesn't affect the recording at all. I checked the volume on the camera and everything, I can't seem to fix it. I thought it was the headphones but then I plugged the very same headphones into my ipod and both sides work perfectly so I don't get it.

These two problems aside, my test shoot went extremely well. The sound quality was excellent and the issues mentioned above had no effect on the actual recording. We tested it in a living room and in a hallway, my friend had me speak loud, normal, and whisper while standing some 20 feet down the hall from him/the camera. My whisper was picked up nice and clear, it was amazing.

The "buzzing" you are hearing is actually the video signal. Note that the same connector is used for both the "A/V" output AND the headphone output. What you are hearing is exactly how the camcorder was designed to operate. I have not had the problem with my HV30 where it keeps switching back, however.

As for why the left and right channels are different levels, that is a different kind of problem. You have done the proper "differential diagnosis" by trying the headphones in another source (your iPod). Of course, your microphone is a monaural source with a connection only to the left channel (the tip of the 3.5mm male mini-phone plug). So the real mystery is why you are hearing anything at all in the right channel.

Wow this just answered my question keeping me up into the wee hours. I just bought my zoom h4n and rode ntg 3 i could not understand why i am only seeing a readout on the left channel as well as hearing out of one side of the headphones? I guess its normal YAY!!! I can get some sleep now!
