Shotgun for outdoors, hyper for interiors

Why is this recommended? What specific characteristics of pickup pattern makes one more suitable for a certain environment than the other? I assumed a tighter pickup pattern would always be better for recording dialogue in a noisy situation, but could someone explain why that isn't the case?

shotguns not work well in reverb spaces to much coloraion on sound .
but if there is mo reverb - you can go with shotgun indoor .
tighter pick up pattern never an ideal in quit space , you wll have more problems with off mic ,

do you have any model that you recommand for indoor mic. i have a wonderful shotgun mic for outside but inside i got nothing. i heard that rode nt3 is one of the best.

never was big fan of rodes , actually not worked with that specific model
may be good ,maybe not.
its avbit heavy working on the boom
ypu have aplenty hypers which probbaly give equal or better results which weight less
of course it more about your budget
thats go from 200 for oktava /my chiniz friend - waist of the money schoeps cmc641 for 2 grand
something in the midle wich sounds good you have
mbho 604/603 with ka-500, geffel 210, neuman 185 . neuman 150 , akg 483,
mkh-40, mkh 50 . the new mh 8040 from sennheiser

Although Oleg hates 'em, the industry standard 'go-to' hypercardioid for boomng is the Schoeps CMC641. The Rode NT3 is not a bad mic, but it's a far cry from the same league as the Schoeps, Neumann, or Sennheiser. If you're thinking about mounting it on a hand-held boom pole, the Rode is mighty big and heavy for that sort of application - every ounce counts out on the end of a 10-foot lever arm.

Steve i dont hate , as not like many of you i have a few from an each brand including the schoeps , so from 20 years recording can say easily - waist of money in current prices .
by the way i know more people who use other brands then schoeps and not really influenced by reading these who make huge profits on your back propaganda :-)
so give me a brake - the mob rules in USA Industry doesnt really concern me at all ,only the pay check i get for my work with or without schoeps :-)

steve why do you think the cmt -5 wasn't raised at price as the all others ?
in Europe it cost -1550euro - 2300usd :-)
ill tell you why - there is not enough idiots to buy it in the states
now if you will not buy schoeps and mr X will not buy schoeps and mr y will not buy schoeps as it cost like 4 weal chiniz car( going down from convier) you will see that the prices would go down .
as it happened here with volvo - they lost the guvernment statutes to be minister car and the their market felt down by 75 % as the glory had gone , so they did what never Israeli car seller did - they lowered the price for 30%(20000usd) to be the best and the cheapest in their sub group
.
so my dear when you dont see the logo - everything works as long it works
and better remember when you buy at trew audio or the similar , they are making almost the same % on at or schoeps but the % in $ on schoeps are 4 times more , so dont expect they will ever tell you the truth , they will tell you what best for their selery .
if you like schoeps its good , you just loosing the vacation on caribbean you could make , get alay and have good memories , instead you will have to work hard to support the logo .
but you are young - you have allota time to learn it :-)

LOL - wish I was young with a lot of time to make mistakes! 62 years old geezer here, returning to production work after a 25 years hiatus as a computer geek! (BTW, I'm told there's no price increase on Schoeps here in Canada.) At any rate, my comment wasn't advocacy for any particular brand of mic as it was to remind bigshiney... to keep his being told the "NT3 is a good mic [for interiors]" in perspective as it would not be the first choice of most working professionals in most circumstances. You do have to admit that for better or worse the Schoeps CMC641 is very widely used, perhaps the most widely used, hyper for booming interiors in professional circles.

ok excuse me, i had the feeling i am dealing with very young sound man , full of enthusiasm ( what looks true as you didn't work quit allot so came to your second ugh:-))
about spread of the schoeps- - locally less then 10% , most sennheisers and Newman's
Europe - i know more people with neumans and mkh40-50 and quit allot english guys who works akg
so maybe they pumped better in usa and as usially people buy what they see at the neighbours house .
for me - it really doesnt matter what would i put o the boom as long as i have the same in the bag .
last one i finished was recorded completely with gefells and only for car scenes the schoepses where taken out because the swivel joints

I think for $300 you have very few choices, I think the logical recommendations, even though I have no experience with either(although plenty of others do), are the Oktava MK-012 with hypercardioid capsule, and the AKG Blue Line with CK-93, if you up your budget a bit. With the Oktava, you will definitely need wind protection, I've heard it used without and it was not acceptable. So you'll have to budget for the Rycote Baby ball gag on top of the oktava.
The stickies of course would have told you this, be sure to use them.

i need a mic for indoor. i already have the at897 shotgun for outside but inside it'S crap . that'S why i need a hyper for inside
