Shotgun Audio Question and settings?

I just purchased an Azden SGM -2X and I know its not the best mic in the world nut for a tight budget I was looking for something with multi uses. My questions are what settings do you guys recommend and I can't figure out why it still works like a stereo mic, I don't think it is but both levels can be adjusted, is this working like a two channel mixer?
Any help will be greatly appreciated!

How do you have it connected and what are your settings?
You could be seeing the built in mike on the other channel.
The other thing is to hook it up to ch 2 xlr and then you can set both channels to record but have the option to set the volumes differently for protection.
