Shot Footage on Tape to Digital Capture?

I want to avoid at all costs Capture Cards during the Import of my Shot Footage on mini-DV. Is there a way to Capture from my tapes via Firewire (Camera or Deck) lets say to Quickstream DV or any other Device that can record Footage directly to a Portable Hard Drive? I realize these Digital Capture Drives are made for Recording Direct from Camera but is there any way possible to Play back or dupe a Tape to Disk Drives and have the Footage transferred to File Form?

The nNovia (Quiclkcapture) Tech says, yes... their device can do it, but has anyone every tried this unusual technique?
