i shot for the first time 480i/24p it the footage looks a bit rough to me, like jagged or interlaced. maybe i'm just so used to shooting in HD, but is there anyway to get my footage to not look so pixelated?

i've attached a screenshot, it looks a little worse when the actual footage is playing.

no i hadn't done anything. i'm in FCP 6, i have my sequence setup for my HD footage (720/24pn) and am trying to edit everything on the same timeline. am i supposed to do something specific for the 480 footage?

how do i remove the 3:2 pulldown? i never was really clear on that since i've always shot in the same format a majority of the time

What's that a screenshot of exactly? You know in FCP you're just looking at a Proxy and in QT Player the default playback is half resolution... So gauging on the desktop is not great. How does it look when you play out to Firewire onto an NTSC monitor? And what are your capture and sequence presets. It's basic DV 101 stuff you've got there.

its a shot of some event i had to film last week. i was running out of space on my cards and had to film the last half of it in a format that took up less space.

i've attached another shot that may show better of what i'm seeing. you'll notice jagged edges in the black areas around the lights, etc. it looks like this on a separate monitor, on the individual QT files and in my camera played as clips, however all the HD footage on the same card looks fine as always.

i attached a screenshot of my sequence settings too. it may be basic dv 101 stuff here, but i've never had this issue so its new territory for me.

Ha- not asking what the content of the shot is- because that's irrelevant. But which program are you taking these screenshots from- FCP, QT Player- ? And those sequence settings are for a 720p sequence- but you say you shot in 480p- so that's not the right setting for that footage. Should be 480.

lol oh my bad, the first one was a screenshot from Qt and the second one was from FCP. i thought with this version of FCP one of the main new features was that you could have multiple formats on the same timeline? i actually hadn't done that before since i normally shoot in the same format all the time.

Sure you can dump anything you want onto a timeline but if it's not a matching format it will be upconverted and the upconversion quality is pretty iffy with just FCP. So if you want this to look its best you need to have it on a 480 project. If this has to be mixed with a 720p project- well don't expect miracles. You're basically scaling up your footage by almost 200%- going to look bad.

right, and that's no big deal, i can use another sequence, actually i just did and it looks the same, the issue i'm having is that the actual source files are pixelated.

You might be too used to HD, but DV doesn't always look good. Another thing is that FCP lowers the quality of the footage so that smooth playback can occur. The only, and I mean ONLY, way to judge the quality if your footage is on a broadcast monitor, or TV, connected to your system properly. For DV, firewire out to a DV camera/deck/converter box to a TV works great. For HD, you need an HD IO box or capture card, and HD monitor/TV.

And yes, putting 480 DV into a 720p sequence will make it look worse. Only hardware conversions will really make it look...acceptable. It still will in NO way be HD quality. You shot DV, a very low end SD format.

Let's not harsh too much on DV- 10 years ago that's the best there was prosumer-wise.... :)

ALL there was? Sorry, where have YOU been? Digibeta and betaSP were the MAIN formats for SD for a long long time. And DV was always the B-Camera. At least in my broadcast world. And some shows might shoot on DV, but those were always known to be the lower budget, lower quality shows. Just like HDV is today. HDV shows are BRONZE level, or known to be low end. Main cameras are F900, XDCAM and DVCPRO HD and AVCIntra.

But you said it...proSUMER. That is not really high end stuff. DV is low end. And trying to put it in HD...makes it worse.

I said prosumer. How much was a BetaSP camera and deck and editing system in 1999? Exactly...
