I'm determined to make 2015 the year I stop letting life get in the way. A good way to start would be to have some scripts to start the ball rolling before January gets away from me and the whole year is lost. It will also allow me to map out the year and take the pressure off me to do it all. I've been doing too much overtime in the dayjob to write lately so I might as well use the money to buy back the time that was robbed from me. Besides, doing it all myself is less fun. So looking to buy a handful of scripts for myself and a couple of fellow filmmakers who are joining me in this commitment to next year.
I'm looking to purchase at least 3 scripts, maybe as many as a dozen depending on what I get and how much the taxman takes from my OT.
I'm after a range of scripts for some variety in my year. In general prefer high concept genre and exploitation films up to 20 pages long, 6-12 being ideal. Horror themes (no torture porn), ghost stories, scifi, crime (especially drug related), road movies, stoner, cyberpunk, steampunk, any ...punk, comedy/oddball, nerd/geek themes or just show me something cool or something I haven't seen before. Inspire me. Religion as mythology ie Angels/Demons in The Prophecy or Gabriel - cool. Religion as religion - not cool. Anything that has an associated subculture is probably something I'm looking for. Something that has big production value or big ideas for low cost in terms of costumes/props/locations, I'm interested in. Also looking for short dramas, up to 8 pages that we can shoot in a weekend or two at short notice or for when the budget isn't there. Kitchensink dramas are okay. Exploitation/social issues are good - domestic violence, racism, sexism, any ...ism. Something with tension and gives an actor a good scene. I'd also consider something targeted at kids or kid friendly too. Be nice if I could show at least one project to my nephews and niece. Otherwise generally targeting a mature rating.
Production budgets will be very low. Likely max $5000, most lower than that. Blow my mind and I might try to do better. Pay will be 5% of the budget, $10 a page or $100 (whichever is better) for each script selected. I'm not expecting scripts to be better than if I asked for free scripts but I am expecting everyone to feel better about it than simply giving their work away. This is mainly an effort to get together a local collective to build up experience, professionalism, reels, contacts and develop my team. Only the writer will be getting paid (since you won't be able to share in the cold, soggy pizza!). Scripts will almost certainly be edited, for localisation at the very least. However writer will retain the primary writer's credit, unless they choose not to. Further considerations can be negotiated in the contract.
