Short question. Plz guide...

Yeah .. headphones plugged into the camera via RCA connection will get a better quality sound to monitor than headphones plugged into the mini-jack of the camcorder.

Just get a phono jack to 2 RCA cable (Y cable) if you are using quality headphones like the Sony MDR-7506

The main benefit of the preamp/mixer in between the mic and camera is that they are generally superior to the built in preamps in the camcorder and in addition they give you the ability to mix and match levels from more than one source into the audio track.

it wouldnt work good , you need a headphone amp , this solution works best with external mixer

aghhhh! So I will probably get the Oktava with the mini $7 windscreen and then sit on it for a while before getting the second step wich could be

a. mini ball windshield and dead cat for it at a total of $209 plus shipping... use the mni windscreen and both of these and hope the wind doesn't pick up and the mic will still be able to pic up the sound with all these on. It would look like amount of sweaters I'll have on when I get to Fargo Tuesday!

b. An NTG-2 with no (extra) wind protection at $249

And lastly, the one that will evoke a short uncontrolable chuckle on most Audio guys round these parts of the forum:

c. Spend more (wait and then...)

Yes, (I am not considering the NTG-1 because the NTG-2 is only $20 more)
(The prices I posted include shipping)

why buy something that weight, cost more and have more length and do the same for your goals .sorry ,stupid as i see it

you can buy 2 foams and make your oun fur put over to work outside with octava , the psc ( or other) shock mount is must

Oleg,

Should I just monitor with headphones plugged into the mixpre? With the mixpre between the mic and camcorder? No need to add anything else?

its always better monitoring the camera , so you know your audio at least came to its inputs , it would be little bit noisy then the mixers outs ,
but for me it exactly like make second copy of the file , if i dont do it it doesnt exist :-)
buy dedicated snake between the mixer and camera 2 balance ins ,1 stereo unbalance out , make rca to min ifemaile adapter ( use right angles rcas) to monitor the camera

Oleg,

Thank you for reminding me of the advice you gave before about using two foams and a fur for a usable windscreen for the Oktava.

USLatin, we could save some money and get the standard small foam that comes with the mic along with a Shure Beta 57 foam here http://www.fullcompass.com/product/302193.html and put some fur over it and be good to go.

Oleg, would this locking foam windscreen for the Shure Beta 57 here http://www.fullcompass.com/product/288025.html work with the Oktava as well?

Thanks for your help.

John

Had to edit, lol almost forgot shock mount!!!! pheeew...

I thought that running long lenghts of XLR and the mic being powered by phantom power might also be a good reason to get one that could be powered in-mic, but from your response i guess that's obvious not the case and phantom power from the camera would do just fine. So I'll have $20 more, every bit helps! Thanks for the $20 Oleg, you got me a pair of cheap headphones to start monitoring with!
 :dankk2:

Wow! So get the tiny foam, then buy a foam that fits over this first foam and then make a little fur of my-own? Sure, I can do that! I guess the "severe condition" foam at their site is the same as two sets of foam over each other so I'll get that and the smaller one to use indoors for when I move the boom quickly. I just bumped into a do-it-yourslelf guide on how to make a zeppelin looking frame to cover with a bright purple fur... So I guess my outdoor rig will look kinda girly if you guys don't help me find a more manly one! lol, I bet I'll find something. Guess I don't ge the free headphones from you Oleg, instead I get an initial package that costs less than the one I was considering and it is equipment I'll keep using indoors even when I get more $!

Ok, so this will be it, end of story (till I get more $ ):

_Oktava MK012A (with small and "severe condition" windscreens & 1ft. XLR)
$249.8 at http://www.sound-room.com/inc/sdetail/474
_Boom pole (4-section 9ft. aluminum)
$138 at http://www.vtpcorp.com/
_XLR cables (Audio Tecnica) 30ft and 50ft.
$47.90 (+ shipp) www.B&H.com
_Headphones (Sennheiser HD201)
$20 www.Amazon.com
_SSM-1 SABRA-SOM Universal Shock-Mount
$49 (shipped with mic) http://www.sound-room.com/inc/sdetail/284

TOTAL $514.7
only $14.7 more than what I set out to get, must be fate!

I am sure you guys might be able to guide me to a slightly cheaper and similar boom pole elsewere but VTP is where I'm getting my HVX @ $5000 and I am already taking off their list the AT897 at $286 (bet that was high) and a 25ft. XLR at $30 which I found (audio tecnicas) at B&H for $10 less... Hope they don't want to change my quote! If they get stiff I'll give him the XLR, doubt they'll carry the Oktava AND match the price...

COOL! I am happy, I am not spending money on anything I won't keep using "forever"... next step, a $500 directional shotgun. Then again I have NO clue as to what that will be, I am open to suggestions all the way up to the $1100.- mark that I saw some of the more popular mics fall into, but will be considering the $500 strongly since there is tons of stuff to get on the third wave of equipment

Okay, so I think what you are saying is what I was thinking of doing in the first place but I am not sure. Please correct me if I am wrong. I hook the mixpre's 2 xlr out to the camcorder's 2 xlr in with a dedicated snake (2 xlr's) cable. Then I monitor the camera by connecting the headphones to a cable that goes from headphone jack into 2 RCA right angle connectors that plug into the camcorders RCA stereo outputs.

Is this correct?

EDIT -- I think I understand that also I would need a headphone amp if plugging into the RCA out instead of the mini-jack. Is this because of a lower signal level coming out of the RCA's? Can you suggest an amp for this?

I will try to research more on my own too as I feel that I start asking too many questions of you. We all appreciate help but it must get old sometimes to have people trying to take advantage of your experience so often with questions about what to do and what to buy.

Yes USLatin,

We are definitely in the same boat! :nads:

I sense that you are overloading your brain as much as I am on trying to get the proper equipment.

Hopefully we can get this stuff narrowed down completely in a few more days.

Yea brother! I don't know if you bumped into it but I have a post where I discuss my whole package in the Hardware section of the HVX... Feel free to comment on the rest o' the stuff...

i dont come educate any one here but as i see it if you get only one microphone , get something that you can use in 80-90% of your work with compromise , so to buy octava is kind shot to your leg .
dont get me wrong, iam not a rode or at 897 blind beliver and work whith much better microphones which cost 4-5 times more .
but for you ,the ntg -1 would give about what you looking from 1 mic , it will do the job when it on the camera , it would do the job when it on the boom , not the idial for interiars but every enteriar has its own charackteristic so no oktava or any other would save you from acoustic failor , better get something that can rgect not wonted sounds even it a tube and if you shooting in a buisy arias where you cant block the trafic or anything on the sides it would work much better ,
2 .that mic has internal low cut filter which would help you with wind rumbling or boom rumbling - why its important , since your camera doesnt have any filter inline with your inputs .
boom pole - look for something that at least 8 feet , less then that you will curse the day you bought less , think about framing - you will need make stuff which more then 5 feet away .
headphones - buy good ones - that the only reference you have for your sound .
cables - as i told you , dont buy stocked chiniz made , invest in good cables
shock mount - psc is better made for your purpes , it light and made from one pease .2 bands only ,wery low self noise
octava - after you make some money buy the octava , there are palnty run on ebay or from ex tappers .

so the rode with its fur is about 260 , the boom is another 180 from k-tek , the suspention is 55 , the cables and headphones you need to deside what you like to invest
one monght without beer would cover you the difference :-)
my 2 shekels

you connect the rca outs to external monitor in on your mix pre
so you have the ability heare your mixer and return signal from the camera .
you dont need externa headphone amp , you already have one inside your mix pre .

Thank you for clearing that up for me

Ok, so I put in the order and thought you might be curious to see what I got:

_XLR 30ft. (Audio Tecnica)
_XLR 50ft. (Audio Tecnica)
_K-Tec aluminum wired 9.2' boom (KE110CC)
_Rode NTG-1 shotgun (with 1.5ft XLR)
_Rode SM3 mount
_Rode DeadCat
_Sony MDR-7506 headphones (Pro)

So I guess I'll get the Oktava MK012A and I'll get a "monitoring box" for the boom operator to be able to plug his headphones into next, and then I'll upgrade to a "more than acceptable" shotgun.

Thank you John and Oleg!!!

Good luck with everything!

I am getting ready to make some orders here myself any day now.

It looks like you've got some good equipment on the way. I will be getting the same boom pole and headphones that you are getting. I am going to use the Oktava for now as an interior mic.

Cool! I wish I had that Oktava coming! I Went with the shotty because it might be a month or two before I can spend ANY money so it will be more versatile with all the exterior tuff I am planning on doing, and the first thing I will get will be it... it will get me mich nicer voice-over stuff...
Did you see that Dvrack is $499 from Adobe themselves now? :engel017:  that's good timing for a few hundred more wich basically got me the better boom-pole and headphones!
