Short Going to 35mm

Hey everyone,

I've been watching the forum and reading as much as I can. I just got my DVX100a yesterday and I'm glad to say that this forum has helped me greatly in my decision.

Anyway, I'm shooting a film in August and I want to take it to festivals so that will eventually mean going to 35mm, but what I need to understand before production begins is whether or not to go anamorphic or shoot 4:3. I haven't found a straight answer. Everyone seems to have an argument for each but clearly there has to be an advantage to one.....right? If I shoot 4:3, what will that look like on screen? Will it blow the image up to fit a 16:9 screen? and if so, should I use a grease marker to frame the images?

HELP ME OUT GUYS! I'm lost...

Re: Short Going to 35mm

I may be wrong, but I think that most festivals now take digital films. I mean, films on DV.

As for the anamorphic question, you better wait for other guys answers. Probably Barry Green will clarify this better to you.

All the best

Fidel.

Thanks for the quick reply Fidel.

I know a lot of Film Festivals have digital projectors but if this short does well in those ones, I want to be able to send it to some that perhaps only take film prints. You know what I'm saying...

The best answer for you is to ask the transfer lab you plan on using. Each lab has different requirements and different preferences. Some may tell you to absolutely use the anamorphic, others may prefer without.

I did a transfer using DVFILM, they highly recommend the anamorphic and I agree. The anamorphic can give you about 30% more resolution on the screen. It takes a lot of work to extract that quality, but it's there if you work for it, and when you blow up on a big screen, you want all the resolution you can get.
