shopping in new york

not sure if this is the right section but here goes.

hi, as a dvx100 pal owner in london I am planning a trip to new york for the first time, I am looking to buy accessories .
So wondering if anyone has any advice about what is currently good value, popular and compatable with the uk version as the dollar is favorable to the pound.
I am looking for amongst other things, filters, dischargers, batteries and more specifically a decent microphone, any advice as to which one?

I am wondering what shops might I feasibly manage to find or tourist traps I should avoid , and any tips regarding customs?

many thanks

Re: shopping in new york

first of all.. everything in NY will kick Londons ass in terms of prices.. I was in NY last month and London last week and couldnt believe how much you poor london guys get ripped off.. expect to pay almost half for everything.

That said.. in NY you gotta visit BH.. it will blow your mind. its on 8th or 9th i think, you cant miss it. They have pretty much everything ever made for our cameras, and the price is insane.. even the whole buying process there is really cool..

Re: shopping in new york

Yeah, listen to Jarred and go straight to B&H. Amazing selection and fair prices, plus it's a cultural experience of it's own. :) Stay away from *all* of those little photo/electronics stores--they'll all try to fleece you in one way or another. Tips for customs? Well, you can declare everything you bought upon your return...or throw away the boxes and mail the receipts back to yourself--let your conscience decide. :)

Re: shopping in new york

Thankyou for the info and tips, most usefull.
Should you haggle for better prices in stores in ny? like you would in tottenham ct rd in london?

Re: shopping in new york

I don't think B&H will haggle at all. You could surely haggle with the millions of little electronics all over the place in NYC, but as Barry said, avoid those places like the plague. Don't forget to sample some of the other great stuff in NYC (go see Phantom of the Opera, but your tickets day of show at TKTS at Times Square or go to box office at Majestic Theater on 44St, I think). Stop in for dinner at Carmine's, right across the street from the Majestic for a good, reasonably priced Italian dinner before show. Well, I could go on and on....

There's a really cool art installation going on in Central Park right now too. Get some grabs/clips for us!

Re: shopping in new york

I like Adorama too. It's not too far from B+H. Doesn't have the cool factor like B+H though.

Re: shopping in new york

big tip, b&h is like a candy shop for audio/video gear.

do you research and have a good list of what you are looking for.

it can be overwelming when you walk in there.

the people are great (except for one guy in the hi end video who is a dick)

they are supposedly not on commission.

there is a guy in pro audio who is amazing, he will talk to you forever if you have a question about how things work and will draw some sketches if you have advanced questions about connections.

some of the nicest people anywhere.

Re: shopping in new york

Sometimes you can do a *little* bit of haggling at B&H. Usually, with a large order you can ask them to throw in something extra--like some tapes or film, but if you're order is small (<$1000), I wouldn't bother. Take advantage of the free candies on the counter--your blood sugar will drop to dangerously low levels after you've been there for hours and have skipped a meal or two. :) I usually go nuts in the lighting department because it's hard to find stores that have any decent sized lighting displays.

Re: shopping in new york

Indeed, if you can, walk through this art installation in Central Park. I work for CNN and the NY office is right outside Central Park so I see it from overhead ... A long domino line of orange gates ... interesting.

Also, I buy all my stuff from B&H ... Absolutely great place with great people ... never had a problem.

Re: shopping in new york

oh amn B&H is solid. tehy will not flinch, iwas gonna givethem over 5,000 and they wouldnt budge.  It worked out that if ibough the cam from EVS isaved like 350$, ifthey could come clse to matchng it i would have bought it from them in cash on the spot.  They said no, and i made a new ally in Rush.  and saved enough to buy a Tripod.

I still ike B& h But its only good if you r purchase isnt gonna be cheaper if it was shipped and you saved the tax. like on a DVX, 3,500 X .08%= 280$ from EVS itwas 3,300 + 70 shipping. FAR cheaper. so i just buy tapes and cheape items fomr them.
