Shopping cart POV

I need to get some shots next week where we see the POV of a shopper who is behind a shopping cart as she is milling about a store. Imagine the camera is looking at the handle of the shopping cart and we see our actress' hands on it. I appreciate any ideas as to rigging this.

I have been playing with a couple long and short arms and I can see how I can get the job done with them but if anyone has othr ideas I'd appreciate it. Thanks!

Depends on you cgaracter and what type of others shots you are cutting from or cutting to.

to see the cart handle and hands may feel odd to the audience if other shots show the character to be fairly tall, not to mention if it's a POV the cut should relate to the directions their face is pointing from the cut.

This wouldn't be a static shot IMO, since people generaly look around while movin gup and down the isle. This would also take a pretty wide lens.

It sounds like the simplest thing here is a steadycam type shot.

don't know if any of that helped, but it did remind me I need to go shopping - thanks

Maybe I haven't described the shot well....the camera will be looking down towards the handle and the shoppers hands...not toward the shoppers face...we will never see her face in this sequence.

It won't be static, that's why I'm asking for ideas on how to rig the camera to the cart. She will be going down the aisle and the camera will capture this action. In essence, the camera will be between the actress and the cart with her arms outstretched to have her hands on the handle. I hope this makes some sense....thanks!

sounds like an undersling jib shot, at least thats how I'd do it. it can be price to rent that equipment though. may be easier to have the cameraman just go handheld standing behind her reaching over her shoulders.

not much else I can offer

No way dude. Helmet Cam!!!! Its the only way to go.

I love the internet

Why don't you just hold the camera infront of the shopping cart and have the actress stand behind you and put her arms in the space between your arms and your body on each side so it looks like her hands are coming out of you. To make this more acturate you can wear idential clothes to the actress so if feet or whatever get in the shot in looks about right.

..thats exactly what i would do.. if i was single and looking to get fresh with the actress. lol

seriosly though, it doesnt have to be complicated. just have her tie her hair back if its long so it doesnt get in the way,.. have her put her head off to one side, and then walk behind her and shoot over her shoulder down to get the shot you want. her arms wont likely be long wnough to give you room to shoot down if you are in front of her. you could rig up some huge thing to attach the camera to the cart, or you could save yourself hours of time and some moeny, and just keep it simple. either way the shot will be somewhat shakey since shopping carts generally roll about as good as a keyboard. but if your good with your handheld shots it could be pretty smooth resting on her shoulder.

Nobody got my joke huh?
Seriously, I'd do it the same way iamloser said. Definitely don't attach it to the shopping cart, I've done that and you will not get any good results. You know, I just thought of something. Maybe you could mount your camera on a monopod that you could either rest on the actresses shoulder or hold above and in front of her. :undecided Just tryin to make up for my previous attempts at humor.

Apparently subtle humor is less appreciated around here (hehe). My reference to the Snori cam in "Requiem for a Dream" seemed to go unnoticed as well.

As is said:

Humor, explained, isn't humor.

Thanks for all the responses (and humor ;)). I probably am making this more complicated than it needs to be....the shoot is this coming friday, I will do some tests between now and then. Thanks!!

Hey dude,
I just saw this thing in another post. Looks like it might be perfect for doing it OTS the way I described. And you can tilt! Don't know how much it is but check it out.

I didn't see a price on that rig, it unless it's real cheap I'd rather have the Varizoom Flowpod, which is what I currently use and is more versital in my opinion and at a reasonable cost of just under 400 if you have the right dealer connections. You can also get a steady cam rig for it for just 700 or so from varizoom that works well with the DVX. However, I'm worried that the new HVX may be too heavy for it - we'll see.
