Shooting with 35mm adaptor and without on same shoot???

I shot once on a HVX and I asked my D.P. if I can shoot some shots with the 35mm adaptor AND some shots without the 35mm adaptor.

The D.P. told me you can tell right away the difference and he suggested to shoot with the 35mm adaptor ONLY.

My question is....

....Has anyone ever "mixed up" the shots??? Couldn't you do something in post (color correcting) to blend the 35mm shots and the regular 24p shots???

I would appreciate if if someone could tell me if it's possible.

Thanks

The only difference would be that the depth of field would be non-existent without the 35mm adaptor. There is nothing that you can do in post to recreate that effect. So, unless you want a shot where there is deep DOF, then you could use the camera without the adaptor, but you could also just move the camera back to get the deep DOF too, or a smaller lens size.

I run into that problem with UNZEIT.
After driving 70 miles to do some extra shots for a scene, I found out that I forgot the LEX. DUH!

Driving back home to get it was not an option ,so I shot with the bare HVX.

First I tried to Zoom in as much as possible and move the camera way back to get at least some DOF.

Didn`t work.

So I faked it in post and if you look close to the end of the interrogation scene (the cut before and after the first explosion), you can see it.

Looks like crap to me. I thought they would tear us appart for that - but to my surprise - no one said a word about it.

You don't always need shallow DOF - so you can get away with it if you're using the camera without the adapter for the right shots (that is where you don't want a shallow depth of field)

DOPs shooting on 35mm use different lenses and different stops as well to achieve huge differences in the depth of field- you don't want a shallow depth of field in a landscape shot, for example.

I have never taken the LEX off of my DVX just because it so much of a pain in the a$$ to remove and lock the focus back down again. I have some pretty wide lenses so I just use those and keep it assembled. But I am sure you can do it without image quality issues.

Generally the reason people have problems going between the stock lens and an adapter is because of the sharpness. If you shoot your bare lens with a 1/2 or 1/4 black promist, they can cut quite well.

The "look" of the footage is noticeably different between adapter and non-adapter.

I have done this, and anticipate having to apply some filters in post to make the non-adapter footage match.

I tend to just stick with all adapter footage on the same project but lately I'm wondering if it's be better to shoot very wide shots without the adapter...

I see why you would want the stock lens for wide shots in terms of light, but for my money, my 17mm canon FD lens looks WAY better compared to the stock lens with a wide angle adapter, mostly having to do with barrel distortion. The f4 is a killer inside though. You gotta give it all the light you got.

Getting back to the question at hand, the sharper your adapter, the easier it will match the non-adapter footage.

if you shoot one whole scene without the adapter, as opposed to intercutting it, I'm sure it wouldn't be that noticable.
